The National Strat-O-Matic Hockey League Newsletter League established May 1st, 1997 Volume #3, Issue #26 - January 26, 1999 ************************************************************************** Current League Officers: Commissioner: Doug Norris (303-492-3692) Vice-Commissioner: Andy Bartalone Email List Administator: Andy Bartalone Email the whole league: mailto:nshl@otd.com NSHL Chat List: mailto:nshlchat@otd.com League Web Site: http://amath.colorado.edu/math/student/norrisdt/nshl/nshl.html ************************************************************************** WEEK OFF: This week (beginning January 27, 1999) is the January off-week for the league. All of the games listed as "unplayed" are either marked with who will play them, or are up for grabs. This will be the policy in the future: ideally, turn your games in by the newsletter. If you don't turn your games in on time, not only are you subject to IP, but if I don't know that you'll be playing them, I'll offer them to the first taker. This will become important as the season winds down; I want to start the postseason on time this year, and I'll need all of your help. Summary of the new policy: if you don't turn your games in, but still want to play them, tell me when they'll be played. Thank you. ************************************************************************** END OF THE FARLEY ERA: As mentioned earlier in the day, league founder Richard Farley tendered his resignation as owner of the Dopplegangers this morning. Richard will remain with the league in an associate capacity, and will hopefully be able to contribute to the league once his schedule becomes less hectic. A new owner for the team will be found shortly, but until that time, the Dopplegangers are league-owned. Expect an announcement regarding this sometime before the end of this calendar week. ************************************************************************** OPENING ON CONSTITUTIONAL COUNCIL: With Richard's departure, there is one opening on the Constitutional Council. I urge anyone interested in the success of the league to apply to Patrick Shea for this position; failing that, anyone who wants to see certain rules take effect next season should apply to Patrick. ************************************************************************** STATISTICS DUE FEBRUARY 5: Team statistics are due to the league office on the Friday after the off-week, which will be February 5. Other than the West Coast GRS, please inform me of any road GRS you do not have at that time. Thank you. ************************************************************************** TRADE DEADLINE TWO WEEKS AWAY: Don't forget that the 1998-99 NSHL trading deadline will be immediately following Week Sixteen action. That is Monday, February 8, at midnight Mountain Standard Time. BOTH parties must confirm the trade by that time, and absolutely NO trades will be accepted after that time. For any reason. ************************************************************************** WEEK FIFTEEN REPORT: The Montreal Wanderers reclaimed first place in the Western Conference last week, compiling the first 4-0-0 perfect record in team history. They now hold a large three-point lead over the second-place Seattle Rainiers. The Buffalo Bulldogs now hold a nine-point lead over the St. Michael's Privateers in the East, and if that weren't enough, they have one game in hand (at Indianapolis, week 15). ************************************************************************** IF THE PLAYOFFS STARTED TODAY: Everyone's eagerly awaiting the battle between the Bulldogs and Gulag; first, JT has to hold off the rest of the pack! EASTERN CONFERENCE: #1 Buffalo Bulldogs vs. #4 Brooklyn Gulag #2 St. Michael's Privateers vs. #3 Quebec Polar Sphinx ON THE BUBBLE: #5 Long Island Berserkers (four points out) #6 Rush-Henrietta Comets (four points out) Figuring out the top four seeds in the West is starting to be as easy as Sunday morning. Montreal climbs back to the top, after a 4-0 week. WESTERN CONFERENCE: #1 Montreal Wanderers vs. #4 Vancouver Scouts #2 Seattle Rainiers vs. #3 Florida Hellcats ON THE BUBBLE: #5 Vultures of Fresno (eleven points out) #6 West Coast Dopplegangers (eleven points out) #7 Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs (eleven points out) ************************************************************************** MEDIC ALERT (sponsored by Selsun Blue): A list of the stars you may not be seeing this week: Sergei Fedorov, Paul Kariya, Joe Sakic, Jozef Stumpel, Keith Tkachuk. "Cute guy - too bad he has dandruff." "He should try Selsun Blue!" ************************************************************************** REGULAR SEASON STANDINGS: EASTERN CONFERENCE: NORTHEAST DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP Buffalo Bulldogs 59 36 11 12 84 0.712 176 117 21-5-4 15-6-8 -2 Quebec Polar Sphinx 60 35 19 6 76 0.633 167 126 24-3-3 11-16-3 0 Long Island Berserkers 59 32 23 4 68 0.576 142 131 24-5-1 8-18-3 -1 Indianapolis Chiefs 57 25 25 7 57 0.500 119 136 17-9-1 8-16-6 5 Manayunk Bullies 59 24 31 4 52 0.441 107 149 15-12-3 9-19-1 0 ATLANTIC DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP St. Michael's Privateers 60 33 18 9 75 0.625 184 148 26-2-2 7-16-7 -7 Brooklyn Gulag 60 32 20 8 72 0.600 177 125 24-3-3 8-17-5 3 Rush-Henrietta Comets 60 27 19 14 68 0.567 126 110 17-5-8 10-14-6 0 Lyndonville Blades 60 24 30 6 54 0.450 110 145 18-9-3 6-21-3 -1 New Jersey River Rats 60 19 33 8 46 0.383 111 157 15-11-4 4-22-4 1 WESTERN CONFERENCE: WESTERN DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP Seattle Rainiers 60 30 22 8 68 0.567 158 121 17-7-6 13-15-2 0 Vancouver Scouts 59 24 22 13 61 0.517 149 125 18-6-6 6-16-7 -1 Vultures of Fresno 58 20 28 10 50 0.431 119 147 14-10-4 6-18-6 3 West Coast Dopplegangers 59 21 30 8 50 0.424 131 152 13-13-4 8-17-4 LO Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs 60 19 29 12 50 0.417 133 144 10-13-7 9-16-5 -1 CENTRAL DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP Montreal Wanderers 60 33 22 5 71 0.592 144 114 19-7-4 14-15-1 -2 Florida Hellcats 59 27 24 8 62 0.525 162 123 15-10-4 12-14-4 5 Cabbagetown Red Rockets 60 22 34 4 48 0.400 133 158 15-11-4 7-23-0 0 Toronto Arenas 58 17 32 9 43 0.371 105 132 10-15-5 7-17-4 0 Detroit LugNuts 59 13 41 5 31 0.263 102 195 9-16-4 4-25-1 4 ************************************************************************** ASSOCIATE LIST: SINCE GP Brian Leahy (slap_shot74@msn.com, bleahy@inacom.com) December 1998 4 Bill Muller (WJMIIIREP@aol.com) October 1998 0 Thomas Manna (samanna@acsu.buffalo.edu) October 1998 0 Roy Lamphier (lamphier@ibl.org) October 1998 0 Richard Farley (rfarley@nosc.mil) January 1999 0 If you're still an active associate, and aren't on this list, please get in contact with me. Thanks! Doug ************************************************************************** PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mark Recchi, Montreal - the (eastern time zone) Wanderers wrested control of the West from the Seattle Rainiers last week with a perfect 4-0-0 record, and Mark Recchi was the key reason. Four goals and two assists, as Montreal stormed into the Sunshine State and stole a key victory from interdivision rival Florida. HONOURABLE MENTION: BUF Pavel Bure - With two goals in Buffalo's overtime win over the Berserkers, Bure now has 58 goals for the year, and is on pace to break Jaromir Jagr's league record of 80, set with Seattle in 1996-97. (*) Bure's sniping has the Bulldogs atop the entire National Strat-O-Matic Hockey League. MAN German Titov - the Bullies have struggled lately, but German Titov kept hope alive for Philadelphia hockey fans, as his two goals, including the overtime game-winner, helped the Bullies defeat the Indianapolis Chiefs. SEA "The Streaker" - when Fresno's Brian Savage scored a power-play marker to put the Vultures up, 3-1, midway through the first period at Key Arena Saturday night, the Rainiers were tired and seemingly on their way to defeat. However, a man clad only in socks chose that time to jump onto the ice, where he was chased for nearly three minutes before being caught, arrested, and booked into King County Jail. Given the opportunity to regroup, the Rainiers roared for five unanswered goals, defeating Fresno, 6-3. (*) Is this the record? It's the most I can think of, or find in archived statistics. Please let me know.
