The National Strat-O-Matic Hockey League Newsletter League established May 1, 1997 Volume #4, Issue #4 - October 19, 1999 ************************************************************************** Current League Officers: Commissioner: Doug Norris (303-492-3692) Vice-Commissioner: Andy Bartalone Email List Administator: Andy Bartalone Email the whole league: mailto:nshl@otd.com NSHL Chat List: mailto:nshlchat@otd.com League Web Site: http://amath.colorado.edu/math/student/norrisdt/nshl/nshl.html ************************************************************************** WHAT'S INSIDE: * A look back to Week 3/4, and a look ahead. * Player of the Week. * A boatload of injuries. * And much, much more! ************************************************************************** A LOOK BACK: The injury bug has hit the National league, and it has hit hard. With one game not reported, there were 67 players who will be injured for part or all of the upcoming bi-week, an average of 3.35 per team. On one end of the spectrum, the Baltimore Clippers were not affected at all (*) (better knock on wood, Scoot). On the other, the Vancouver Scouts will be without eight regulars (Bob Carpenter, Byron Dafoe, Patrik Elias, Jeff Friesen, Michal Handzos, Brett Hull, Scott Niedermayer, and Gary Roberts) in a single game (Week 5/6 at New Jersey). Most teams are in similar predicaments. Let's have a show of hands: who likes the 32-man rosters now? On the ice, the Long Island Berserkers took over the top spot in the league, sporting a perfect 6-0-0 home record, and 9-3-0 overall record. "We're really starting to play well together," said defenseman (and first-round draft choice) Eric Brewer. "There's no reason that we can't compete for the Cup." Maybe one reason - the Berserkers are one of the aforementioned teams, missing (among others) superstar forwards Sergei Fedorov and Teemu Selanne in key games at Montreal and Seattle. Florida continues to maintain a strong presence in their new division, the Atlantic, but one of the league's most pleasant surprises is the play of the Cabbagetown Red Rockets. The Rockets, who finished fourth in a weak Central Division last season, sit atop their division four weeks into play, two points ahead of the defending Farley Cup champion Montreal Wanderers. "Team play, that's what it's about," said Niklas Sundstrom, who's been with the squad since its days in Chicago. "All we have to do is outwork the opposition, and we can win. We'll have some tough divisional games coming up, though." (*) It could be argued that Scooter was affected, with the Pavel Bure residence still not returning his phone calls. ************************************************************************** A LOOK AHEAD: Every franchise plays three home-and-home series this week. Yes, the league planned it that way. Seattle and Montreal reprise their Western Conference Final matchup of one year ago, while league powers Brooklyn and Florida meet for a double dip out East. The Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets and Toronto Arenas battle in a mini-"Border War". ************************************************************************** IMPORTANT LEAGUE DATES: October 20: NSHL Week Five begins (MIS are due). November 1: Week Five Game Report Sheets (GRS) due to the league office. November 3: NSHL Week Seven begins (MIS are due). November 8: Team Statistics (through Week 5/6 (*)) due to league office. (*) And no further. If you've played Week 7/8 games by this time, and they are included, it will count as if you've turned in no stats at all. ************************************************************************** WEEK FIVE/SIX SCHEDULE (October 20-November 2, 1999): Buffalo at Baltimore New Jersey at Lyndonville Cabbagetown at Baltimore Quebec at Lyndonville Capital City at Baltimore Vancouver at Lyndonville Detroit at Brooklyn Long Island at Manayunk Florida at Brooklyn Montreal at Manayunk Fort Garry at Brooklyn Seattle at Manayunk Baltimore at Buffalo Long Island at Montreal Cabbagetown at Buffalo Manayunk at Montreal Capital City at Buffalo Seattle at Montreal Baltimore at Cabbagetown Lyndonville at New Jersey Buffalo at Cabbagetown Quebec at New Jersey Capital City at Cabbagetown Vancouver at New Jersey Baltimore at Capital City Lyndonville at Quebec Buffalo at Capital City New Jersey at Quebec Cabbagetown at Capital City Vancouver at Quebec Brooklyn at Detroit Fresno at Rush-Henrietta Florida at Detroit St. Michael's at Rush-Henrietta Fort Garry at Detroit Toronto at Rush-Henrietta Brooklyn at Florida Fresno at St. Michael's Detroit at Florida Rush-Henrietta at St. Michael's Fort Garry at Florida Toronto at St. Michael's Brooklyn at Fort Garry Long Island at Seattle Detroit at Fort Garry Manayunk at Seattle Florida at Fort Garry Montreal at Seattle Rush-Henrietta at Fresno Fresno at Toronto St. Michael's at Fresno Rush-Henrietta at Toronto Toronto at Fresno St. Michael's at Toronto Manayunk at Long Island Lyndonville at Vancouver Montreal at Long Island New Jersey at Vancouver Seattle at Long Island Quebec at Vancouver ************************************************************************** WEEK THREE/FOUR RESULTS: Quebec 2, at Baltimore 2 (OT) QPS Dominik Hasek - playing opposite the opponent's top line, Conroy still found the time to score three times, and assist on eleven others, with a +4 plus/minus, keeping the Privateers in a tight Atlantic race. CCC Pavol Denitra - the Cougars continue to struggle, but forward Pavol Demitra is not the reason. Demitra notched five goals this week, adding an assist. BAL Peter Forsberg - the Clippers are another of the teams fighting for control in the Atlantic Division, and Forsberg has been their sparkplug thus far. Five goals, four assists, and tenacious defense. FGF Saku Koivu - Koivu led the league in goals this week, with six in six games, including two game-winners. His Crabs sit a mere three points back in the Western Division. MON Dimitri Yushkevich - you don't normally see defensemen nominated for PotW. However, Yushkevich isn't your typical defenseman. Tallying twice, and adding two helpers, Dimitri finished with a +7 plus/minus for the week, and his Wanderers rely on his support every night. AND THE WINNER IS: STM Craig Conroy - the Privateers need every point they can get to stay afloat in the tough Atlantic, and Conroy's fourteen points help to keep St. Mike's in the hunt.
