Courtnall, who had earlier announced his intentions to retire at season's end, fell hard to the ice after sustaining a Claude Lemieux bodycheck early in the first period. Preliminary diagnosis is that Courtnall suffered a skull fracture, and is in critical condition at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. "I'm in shock", says linemate Vincent Damphousse. "His helmet cracked under the impact and we all heard the noise. I won't ever forget this moment. I certainly hope he's allright and all our prayers are with him". On the ice, the top four teams in the Western Division continue to make noise, as Fort Garry (4-0-1), Seattle (5-0-0), Vancouver (5-1-0) and Capital City (4-2-0) have remained hot since the All-Star break. "It's tough to have a perfect week like we did, and only gain one point on the division leaders," said Seattle defenseman Brian Leetch. "But that only underlines how tough our division is." On the other hand, the Wanderers, understandably shaken by the injury to Courtnall, went an umimpressive 2-4 to fall below 0.500, but still remain in the lead in the NSHL's Central Division. Holding a three-point lead over Cabbagetown with thirteen games to play, Montreal media is calling on the Wanderers to "win one for Geoff". Overall, three teams (Long Island, Fort Garry, Florida) punched their tickets for postseason action, while one (Detroit) was eliminated. ************************************************************************** A LOOK AHEAD: Well, folks - the deadline's past, and we've got four weeks to the finish line. At least, the finish line for eight teams. Fort Garry and Florida square off in a home-and-home series, one that both squads have been waiting for for weeks. "We need these games," said Hellcat wing Martin Straka. "We've been struggling lately, but a good showing now is important." Seattle and Long Island also meet for a pair, one which the Rainiers must perform well in if they're to catch the Crabs for first in the West. "I object to the phrase 'catch the Crabs'", said Seattle owner Doug Norris. "I mean, really - it's juvenile. Who writes this crap?" ************************************************************************** TRADE DEADLINE IS HERE AND GONE: The Berserkers, already considered the favourite to capture the 2000 Farley Cup, enhanced its chances today, picking up wing Brett Hull from the Vancouver Scouts. Going the other way was promising forward Alexei Morozov and two draft choices, but Long Island players were clearly excited to hear the news. "I've known Brett for a long time," said U.S. Olympic teammate Jeremy Roenick. "And I know that the one thing he'll bring to the table is a desire to win a Farley Cup - that's what this league is all about." Also on the move were Baltimore forwards Anson Carter and Mark Parrish, heading down the Maryland coast to the St. Michael's Privateers. "This deal, from Baltimore's standpoint, only succeeds if that first-round draft choice pans out," said THN correspondent Bob McKenzie. "I think, though, that with the amount of talent available this summer, they had to make this move. Carter and Parrish weren't getting enough playing time, but they'll both be cornerstones of the St. Michael's rebuilding process." The Lyndonville Blades, holding precariously to a playoff spot, acquired centre Chris Gratton and defenseman Bill Houlder from the Vultures of Fresno in exchange for youngsters Jamie Langenbrunner and Anders Eriksson. Gratton, for one, had mixed feelings. "I felt that I was a part of something in Fresno that was going to be big one day, and it pains me to leave in the middle of that. On the other hand, I spent some time in Lyndonville last year, it's close to my family, and I get a chance to win it all this season. You have to appreciate that." One deal that didn't go: Radio station KJR-950 AM in Seattle reported a deal that would have sent prospect Jean-Pierre Dumont to the St. Michael's Privateers. However, the Rainiers themselves had no comment, and the trade deadline passed without incident in the Emerald City, who had made their major moves (Deadmarsh and Desjardins) earlier in the year. No comment from Dumont on the matter. ************************************************************************** 2000 NSHL DRAFT PREVIEW: (What follows is an excellent preview of the upcoming draft, by noted NSHL correspondant Guy Caron. Guy, take it away!) A look at the 2000 NSHL free agent/amateur draft by Guy Caron Well, the trade deadline came and went, with little change to the composition of the teams. It's no wonder so few first round picks have been traded: the 2000 free agent/amateur draft is expected by many to be the richest and the most promising pool of your players in the history of the NSHL. At least 2 full rounds of solid players are expected and the remaining rounds will see players will certain potential. Who else than Gomez? First pick overall should be a no-brainer: it's been a while since any rookie actually finished the year at the top of the scoring list of any non-expansion team and Scott Gomez is about to accomplish the feat. But the beauty of Gomez lies elsewhere: at 21, he's already considered a two-way player and is playing regular shifts, power plays and shorthanded on a team that's considered a Stanley Cup contender. Quite a feat. Simon Gagne has surpassed Maxim Afinogenov for the "best of the rest". That the goalie-starved Flyers refused to trade Gagne in a deal that would have given them Hackett, Malakhov and possibly Corson is saying a lot about how highly touted the former Quebec Rempart is. But both Gagne and Afinogenov are most definitely "can't miss" prospects. The best defenseman in the draft is still Brad Stuart, despite the fact that he has slowed terribly in the second half of the season. He still has to polish his defensive game, but he's proven to be a very adequate quarterback on the Sharks blueline and will only improve with time. Brian Rafalski has been impressive with the Devils, forcing the departure of Sheldon Souray to the Habs for the short-term help of Vladimir Malakhov. He has lesser offensive instincts than Stuart, but plays better in his own end and is more physical as well. The only lowdown for Rafalski is his age: at 27, he's not prone to improve a lot in the next few years. Biron: a sure bet In front of the net, Martin Biron has proven during the long absence of the Dominator that he is the future of the Sabres. He's been magistral for about half the season, trying to salvage what is soon becoming a disaster in Buffalo while playing under the enormous pressure of replacing the best in the world! Incidentally, five of the six best prospects among the goaltenders have been developed in Quebec, in the same school than the Roy, Brodeur, Potvin, Thibault, Theodore. Is it surprising when QJMHL goalie are often facing 60 shots a night? Marc Denis passed Roberto Luongo as the second-best prospect among the goalies. He's still the back-up to Roy for now, but don't be surprised if Saint Patrick is traded in the off-season to make room to Denis. If the Avalanche management doesn't feel Denis is fully ready yet, Roy will hang around some more. Brian Boucher has also passed Luongo on this list. He's on the verge of robbing Vanbiesbrouck of his starter's position for the playoffs (which doesn't mean that the Flyers will go much further, but it's still a sign that says much) and the Flyers traded the only guy who could have been a contender as the goalie of the future when they shipped Jean-Marc Pelletier to Carolina in the Primeau deal. After a shaky start, Boucher is getting more and more self-confident and his technique is also improving, particularly his way of covering angles which was atrocious at the beginning of the season. Luongo has a great future ahead of him. Two handicaps though: (1) he's been sent to the minors, where he doesn't have much more to learn, to play everyday and; (2) He plays for the Isles. Patrick Lalime isn't as flashy as he was in his rookie stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins, when he was unbeaten in his first 17 starts in the NHL. But after a contractual dispute that saw him go to Cleveland, Anaheim and Cincinnati, he's finally back in the big league and for good. He's not the most constant of goaltenders, but he's doing a job to the point where we shouldn't expect Tugnutt back in a Senator uniform next season. [Editor's Note: or even *this* season. :-) ] Manny Fernandez has paid his dues in the minors. Once touted as Jon Casey's successor, he's seen the Stars management lose confidence in him as years went by. He never gave up and is now a most than decent backup to Ed Belfour. Five goals and five assists included the game-winning overtime goal in a big win over the Florida Hellcats. DET Marco Sturm - yes, that's right, a LugNut. Sturm scored a goal in each of his team's three road games this week, and had a point in every game. Overall, Sturm scored five times for the 'Nuts, added two assists, and was a +3 for a team that's last overall in the N. AND THE PLAYER OF THE WEEK IS: Sturm. What more can be said? Marco Sturm is developing into the type of player that the LugNuts need to be competitive in the league. NSHL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Week 1/2: Teemu Selanne, RW, Long Island (4G, 6A, +7) Week 3/4: Craig Conroy, C, St. Michael's (3G, 11A, +4) Week 5/6: Steve Yzerman, C, Florida (6G, 3A, 3GWG, +6) Week 7/8: Jaromir Jagr, RW, Seattle (5G, 5A) Week 9/10: Jeff Friesen, LW, Vancouver (5G, 2A, +4) Week 11/12: Joe Sakic, C, Buffalo (6G, 4A) Week 13/14: Peter Bondra, RW, Brooklyn (9G, 4A) Week 15/16: Ray Bourque, D, Fort Garry (2G, 6A, +5) Week 17/18: Scott Young, RW, Rush-Henrietta (6G, 3A, +4) Week 19/20: Adam Deadmarsh, LW, Seattle (5G, 4A) Week 21/22: Mike Modano, C, Florida (7G, 7A) Week 23/24: Marco Sturm, W, Detroit (5G, 2A, +3) THE NOMINEES: TOR Martin Brodeur - With 37 saves, Brodeur stole a 2-2 tie in Buffalo; the backstop also took victories in road contests at Baltimore and Capital City, as well as wins over Lyndonville (3-1, 36 saves) and New Jersey (4-1, 31 saves). LYN Mike Dunham - Giving the Blades three strong performances at home, Dunham stole victories from Manayunk (3-2) and Montreal (2-1), and nearly beat the Seattle Rainiers (1-3). AND THE GOALIE OF THE WEEK IS: Brodeur. Although Toronto's shot at the playoffs is long, it would surely be zero without Brodeur's nightly heroics. NSHL GOALIES OF THE WEEK: Week 11/12: Steve Shields, Lyndonville (2-0-1, 0.33 GAA, 98.6% sv, 2 ShO) Week 13/14: Nikolai Khabibulin, Long Island (5-0-1, 3 ShO) Week 15/16: Arturs Irbe, Buffalo (4-1-1, 96.5% sv, 0.99 GAA, 3 ShO) Week 17/18: Tommy Salo, Capital City (3-1-1, 94.8% sv, 1.38 GAA, 1 ShO) Week 19/20: Fred Brathwaite, Rush-Henrietta (5-0-0, 1.40 GAA, 95.7% sv, 3 ShO) Week 21/22: Jocelyn Thibault, Fort Garry (4-1-1, 2.16 GAA, 91.8% sv) Week 23/24: Martin Brodeur, Toronto (4-1-1, 2.33 GAA) ************************************************************************** 1999-2000 REGULAR SEASON STANDINGS: NORTHEAST DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP x-Long Island Berserkers 70 43 17 10 96 0.686 232 158 25- 7- 4 18-10- 6 -2 Rush-Henrietta Comets 72 37 27 8 82 0.569 183 171 25- 8- 3 12-19- 5 0 Buffalo Bulldogs 72 33 30 9 75 0.521 199 169 19-14- 3 14-16- 6 -4 Lyndonville Blades 72 30 31 11 71 0.493 175 180 18-15- 3 12-16- 8 -1 Brooklyn Gulag 72 21 37 14 56 0.389 169 203 14-12-10 7-25- 4 3 ATLANTIC DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP x-Florida Hellcats 72 43 19 10 96 0.667 235 169 18-11- 7 25- 8- 3 4 Manayunk Bullies 71 31 31 9 71 0.500 145 154 20-13- 3 11-18- 6 -4 New Jersey River Rats 69 28 33 8 64 0.464 180 197 19-10- 4 9-23- 4 6 Baltimore Clippers 71 25 34 12 62 0.437 183 205 14-15- 7 11-19- 5 9 St. Michael's Privateers 72 20 45 7 47 0.326 148 208 17-15- 4 3-30- 3 5 WESTERN DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP x-Fort Garry Fiddler Crab71 44 18 9 97 0.683 250 175 23- 7- 5 21-11- 4 -1+ Seattle Rainiers 71 39 17 15 93 0.655 204 161 20- 8- 8 19- 9- 7 N/A Vancouver Scouts 72 41 23 8 90 0.625 205 154 25- 7- 4 16-16- 4 -3 Capital City Cougars 72 33 27 12 78 0.542 185 176 25- 5- 6 8-22- 6 2 Vultures of Fresno 72 17 40 15 49 0.340 151 204 11-17- 8 6-23- 7 -8 CENTRAL DIVISION GP W L T PTS PCT GF GA HOME ROAD IP Montreal Wanderers 71 29 30 12 70 0.493 157 165 18-11- 7 11-19- 5 0 Cabbagetown Red Rockets 72 29 34 9 67 0.465 161 181 17-13- 6 12-21- 3 0 Quebec Polar Sphinx 70 28 34 8 64 0.457 148 165 16-15- 3 12-19- 5 5 Toronto Arenas 72 25 38 9 59 0.410 169 214 10-23- 3 15-15- 6 0 z-Detroit LugNuts 72 18 49 5 41 0.285 169 239 12-22- 2 6-27- 3 -9 x-Team clinched postseason berth. z-Team eliminated from postseason consideration. ************************************************************************** TEAM REPORTS - BROOKLYN GULAG: Season of Rebuilding Winds Down... Finally by Jeff Tsuruoka The Brooklyn Gulag took one on the chin in Week 23/24. The Gulag dropped 5 of 6 games, their only win coming in the form, according to Brooklyn defenceman Brendan Witt, of a "frustration-inspired asswhooping" at the expense of the visiting Cabbagetown Red Rockets. "We were so pissed off by the time Cabbagetown got here that I don't think anyone could have stopped us," said Witt. "I kinda felt bad for them." If the Gulag as a whole took on on the chin, defenceman Rob Blake took one in the foot, suffering a season-ending injury in Seattle. At least he won't be alone in the press box. Team scoring leader Peter Bondra (hyperextended knee) will be joining Blake on the injured list. The other Week 23/24 casualty, former captain Dale Hunter (separated shoulder) will spend his time off the ice behind the Gulag bench. This will likley be a preview for next season when Hunter is expected to accept a job as an assistant coach. Hunter injured his shoulder when he made the mistake of trying to hold up Cabbagetown power forward Owen Nolan. "He (Nolan) had a head of steam and was motoring down the wing," explained Hunter, "I moved to cut him off, stuck my arm out to slow him down and he just blew through me like I was a wind chime." When the combative center was asked if he held a grudge, Hunter chuckled. "I'm just glad I still have both arms." Tradewinds ---------- The NSHL trading deadline came and went with little fanfare in Brooklyn. Owner and GM Jeff Tsuruoka decided to stand pat. "I'm very comfortable with the personnel we have going into next season. We received a lot of calls regarding several of our players but nothing was offered that would help our club." Rumor has it that the players most sought after were forwards Matthew Barnaby and Kzryztoff Oliwa. The Gulag did make one deal earlier in the week. Brooklyn sent promising forward Dainius Zubrus to St. Michaels in exchange for defenceman Bret Hedican. Hedican is currently on the injured list, making it clear that the Gulag are thinking of next season. Said Tsuruoka, "I know we're going to need some help on the left side on the blue line for next season. With Blake, Klee, & Tremblay we're pretty solid on the port side. I'm especially thrilled to be going into next year with Rob Blake. He gives us something on our blue line that we haven't had since we lost Vladimir Konstantinov two years ago." ************************************************************************** TEAM REPORTS - SEATTLE RAINIERS: Dumont Shows Promise by Doug Norris Midway through the second period of last week's Seattle-Florida Hellcat game, left wing Jean-Pierre Dumont showed what might be. Taking a pass from established star Jaromir Jagr at the red line (dangerously close to being over two lines), Dumont raced up the ice, depositing his first goal as a Rainier into the Florida net. When the goal was announced, the fans at Key Arena gave the 21-year-old a standing ovation. "We're bringing him along slowly," said Seattle coach Doug Norris, who has played Dumont on a line with veterans Jagr and Doug Gilmour. "We might even send him down to Tacoma [SCMHL] for some more ice time, but if we need him in the playoffs, we think that we can count on him. He might be young, but you've got to get postseason experience sometime." As for Dumont, he's happy to be here. "Jagr's always been one of my favourites growing up, although he doesn't like me saying that because he feels old," joked Dumont. "If I could have even half the career that he's had, that'd be a great life, right?" Certainly, the Rainier brass feels the same way. ************************************************************************** INCENTIVE POINTS: Incentive points are not discretionary, and must be applied per the Constitution.
