The National Strat-O-Matic Hockey League Newsletter League established May 1, 1997 Volume #5, Issue #7 - December 6, 2000 ************************************************************************** Current League Officers: Commissioner: Doug Norris (303-492-3692) Vice-Commissioner: Dean Engemoen Email List Administator: Andy Bartalone Email the whole league: mailto:nshl@buser.net NSHL Chat List: mailto:nshlchat@buser.net League Web Site: http://rintintin.colorado.edu/~norrisdt/nshl/nshl.html ************************************************************************** WEEK FIVE/SIX IN REVIEW: The new top team in the league? "Trader Dean"'s Vancouver Scouts, of course. The Scouts went 3-1-2 this bi-week, including an important home-and-home split with the (former league leading) Seattle Rainiers, to take the top spot by one point. In the key Seattle-Vancouver game at Pacific Coliseum, winger Donald Audette scored twice and added two assists in the Scouts' 7-5 win. Meanwhile, the Rainiers went 1-2-3; their lone win being a defeat of the aforementioned Scouts where they scored three goals in the final frame. The Rainiers still boast the league's top three point-getters; unfortunately, Jamie Storr has faltered since his arrival from Topeka. The best race in the league is still in the Northeast, where the Long Island Berserkers head a pack of five teams within nine points of one another. "It's going to be tough - I'd say that four of us will make the playoffs this spring," said Berserker centre Vincent Lecavalier, whose team boasts an impressive 5-2-2 road mark. Speaking of strong road showing, the Montreal Wanderers, 1999 Farley Cup champions who fell upon hard times last season, are now 7-2 away from the Forum, and have built a seven-point cushion over the Florida Hellcats and Quebec Polar Sphinx in the Atlantic. The Wanderers' play has been keyed by rookie netminder Manny Fernandez, who already has three whitewashings on the young season. The Hellcats, expected (and still expected) to compete for the division title, have been hampered by the slow start of goalie Ed Belfour. For more on Belfour, see the next article. It's become a two-team race in the Midwest, as the Cabbagetown Red Rockets and the newly-relocated Houston Outlaws find themselves tied with 22 points apiece. The two teams won on the other's home ice over the past bi-week, leading owners Scott Powter and Eric Goodman to file competing petitions to the league, requesting that all future HOU-CRR games be played on the other's ice. Commissioner Norris did not comment. ************************************************************************** STATISTICS 101: A STATISTICAL TREATISE ON ED BELFOUR by Doug Norris, Ph.D (ABD) Ed Belfour, goaltender for the Florida Hellcats, has made 34 saves on 80 IR (in-range) shots thus far this young season. With an IRSV% of 57.75, one would expect a mean (average) of 46.2 saves on these 80 IR shots; that is to say, if we ran thousands and thousands of simulations of Ed Belfour, and he faced 80 IR shots each time, we would expect the number of saves to be a normal distribution (a "bell curve") centered at 46.2. Question: Is 34 saves on 80 IR shots abnormally low? Definition: A random variable X has a binomial distribution and it is referred to as a binomial random variable, if and only if its probability distribution is given by: b(x,n,t) = C(n,x)*t^x*(1-t)^(n-x), for x=0,1,2,...,n Reference: "C(n,x)" refers to the number of ways one can choose x objects from a total of n objects. For example, how many ways can you select three coins from a collection of eight (different)? The answer: C(8,3)=56. Some examples of a binomial distribution would be the flipping of a fair coin n times (in this case, t=0.50, since heads and tails come up evenly), rolling a "1" on a (six-sided) die in n attempts (t=1/6 in this case). By inspection, the Belfour model is a binomial distribution. We have n=80, since we have 80 "trials" (attempts) to conisder. t=0.5775, since that is the (theoretical) probability of Belfour making a save on any one trial. Theorem: The mean and the variance of the binomial distribution are mu = n*t and sigma^2 = n*t*(1-t). Proof: Freund, "Mathematical Statistics", p. 188. In the Belfour model, the mean mu = 80*0.5775 = 46.2 (as we observed previously), and the variance sigma^2 = 80*0.5775*(1-0.5775) = 19.5195. Now, in statistics, we would like to know the probability that Ed Belfour would make 34 OR FEWER saves on 80 IR shots. The reason? As n tends towards infinity, each individual value tends towards zero. Example: In a collection of two votes, what is the probability of Al Gore getting exactly one? (Let's say 1/2). Now, in a collection of 1,000,000 votes, what is the probability of Al Gore getting *exactly* 500,000 votes? That's still half of the total, but the probability is nearly zero. To do this, we simply add up the values of b(x,n,t), with n and t previously specified, and x ranging from 0 to 34. That gives the probability that the Belfour model would perform with 34 saves OR WORSE. If we add up these values (go ahead, I'll wait), we get a probability of 0.00427002 (approximately). The odds of the Belfour model performing as exhibited thus far in the 2000-01 NSHL season are about 0.0427%; in other words, this will happen about 1 in 234 times. Not very likely; however, with 20 NSHL teams in the league, and approximately 30 regular goaltenders, it's 1 in 7 that it happens to a regular goaltender such as Ed Belfour. Doug's Conclusion: Yes, it's a bit odd that Ed Belfour has only saved 34 of his 80 in-range shots. Weird things happen all the time in sports, and in simulations of sports. Are the Hellcats being screwed by a faulty computer program? Definitely not - I had the designer look into it personally, and he (claims to have) examined the code within. There *are* bugs in Faceoff, but this isn't one of them. Prediction: it'll even out over the rest of the season. After a full season, if Belfour continues at his current pace, he will have 373 IR shots, and 147 IR saves. The probability of this occurring is approximately 8.11*10^-13, or 1 in 1,233,000,000,000. This also illustrates the fallacy of small sample sizes (like the one we've experiences thus far). These anomalies occur in 18-game samples; they certainly will not in 84-game seasons. Please let me know if anyone needs clarification of anything. ************************************************************************** 2000-01 NSHL SCHEDULE (WEEK SEVEN): (home team is listed FIRST in all instances) Results from Week 7/8 are due to Doug/Dean by December 18.
