The Hellcats, who have been Farley Cup contenders since the start of the (I,N)SHL, now sit a mere seven points behind the Montreal Wanderers in the Atlantic. Also going 5-0-1 were the Lyndonville Blades, who find themselves just three points back of the defending-champion Long Island Berserkers. The league-leading Vancouver Scouts may have made the trade to keep them there today, picking up goaltender Steve Shields from the Lyndonville Blades. Shields, who leads the NSHL with seven shutouts and is second with twenty wins, helps to solidify a squad that many have piced to win the Cup this season. Going the other way is Mike Dunham who, while solid, has yet to win the confidence of the Vancouver fans, and is eager to start again with the resurgent Blades. "This club [Lyndonville] can make a solid run at the [Farley Cup] this year," said Dunham. "I'm looking forward to working with Mike [goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov] and getting us there." The Blades also sent star forward Bill Guerin, along with wing Mike Knuble, to the Brooklyn Gulag in exchange for youngsters Todd Bertizzi, David Legwand and Kevyn Adams. The Gulag then flipped Guerin to the Quebec Polar Sphinx, reacquiring Peter Bondra in the process. Brooklyn GM Jeff Tsuruoka admitted his error in last fall's deal, but openly hoped that a rejuvenated Bondra will pace the Gulag deep into the postseason. It could be the end of the road for goaltending legend Grant Fuhr, released by the Drayton Valley Drillers today. Fuhr, whose last season of NSHL prominence came with the 1997-98 Manayunk Bullies, was picked up by the Drillers as an insurance policy early in January, but it just didn't work out. "Sometimes, you can't go home again," said the native of Spruce Grove, Alberta, who is now seriously considering retirement, although he will "listen to any offers" that come his way. ************************************************************************** NSHL LEAGUE STANDINGS: NORTHEAST DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Long Island Berserkers 42 24 15 3 51 0.607 123 96 16- 5- 0 8-10- 3 Lyndonville Blades 42 21 15 6 48 0.571 100 99 12- 6- 3 9- 9- 3 Rush-Henrietta Comets 42 18 17 7 43 0.512 113 120 11- 5- 5 7-12- 2 Brooklyn Gulag 42 15 21 6 36 0.429 105 111 10- 6- 5 5-15- 1 Buffalo Bulldogs 42 12 25 5 29 0.345 87 123 7-10- 4 5-15- 1 ATLANTIC DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Montreal Wanderers 42 22 12 8 52 0.619 118 87 12- 6- 3 10- 6- 5 Florida Hellcats 42 19 16 7 45 0.536 126 107 11- 9- 1 8- 7- 6 Quebec Polar Sphinx 42 16 22 4 36 0.429 110 129 10- 9- 2 6-13- 2 Indianapolis Racers 42 13 25 4 30 0.357 107 148 8-11- 2 5-14- 2 Manayunk Bullies 42 12 26 4 28 0.333 94 136 7-12- 2 5-14- 2 NORTHWEST DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Vancouver Scouts 42 25 8 9 59 0.702 142 92 16- 3- 2 9- 5- 7 Seattle Rainiers 42 23 15 4 50 0.595 137 111 13- 6- 2 10- 9- 2 Seattle Sasquatch 42 18 15 9 45 0.536 127 120 10- 5- 6 8-10- 3 Drayton Valley Drillers 42 13 21 8 34 0.405 111 139 7- 9- 5 6-12- 3 Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs 42 14 23 5 33 0.393 111 137 10- 8- 3 4-15- 2 MIDWEST DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Houston Outlaws 42 25 11 6 56 0.667 114 80 13- 5- 3 12- 6- 3 Cabbagetown Red Rockets 42 18 16 8 44 0.524 126 109 10- 7- 4 8- 9- 4 Toronto Arenas 42 19 19 4 42 0.500 127 121 9- 9- 3 10-10- 1 Capital City Cougars 42 19 20 3 41 0.488 130 140 12- 8- 1 7-12- 2 Topeka Scarecrows 42 18 22 2 38 0.452 152 155 9-12- 0 9-10- 2 ************************************************************************** 2000-01 NSHL SCHEDULE (WEEK FIFTEEN): (home team is listed FIRST in all instances) 2001/02/08 CRR LIB 2001/02/08 QPS BUF 2001/02/08 TOR MAN 2001/02/08 DVD HOU 2001/02/08 FLO TPK 2001/02/08 CCC BRK 2001/02/08 FGF IND 2001/02/09 VAN RHC 2001/02/09 LIB SES 2001/02/09 BUF SEA 2001/02/10 MON FGF 2001/02/10 CRR FLO 2001/02/10 QPS VAN 2001/02/10 BRK DVD 2001/02/10 IND LYN 2001/02/11 MON LIB 2001/02/11 SEA FLO 2001/02/11 LYN MAN 2001/02/11 SES LYN 2001/02/11 CCC IND 2001/02/11 FGF BRK 2001/02/11 BUF CRR 2001/02/11 HOU RHC 2001/02/12 VAN MON 2001/02/12 QPS HOU 2001/02/12 TOR BUF 2001/02/12 DVD MAN 2001/02/12 LIB TPK 2001/02/12 FLO SES 2001/02/12 RHC CCC 2001/02/13 CRR FGF 2001/02/13 SEA LIB 2001/02/13 LYN HOU 2001/02/14 BRK QPS 2001/02/14 IND TOR 2001/02/14 RHC FLO 2001/02/14 MON CCC 2001/02/14 MAN CRR 2001/02/14 DVD BUF 2001/02/15 TPK DVD 2001/02/15 BUF MON 2001/02/15 CCC SES 2001/02/16 LIB IND 2001/02/16 FLO BRK 2001/02/16 FGF TPK 2001/02/16 MAN RHC 2001/02/16 HOU SEA 2001/02/16 LYN VAN 2001/02/17 VAN CRR 2001/02/17 TPK LYN 2001/02/17 SES QPS 2001/02/18 RHC FGF 2001/02/18 SEA CCC 2001/02/18 HOU MON 2001/02/18 BRK TOR 2001/02/18 IND DVD 2001/02/19 MAN SEA 2001/02/19 TOR VAN 2001/02/19 TPK QPS 2001/02/19 SES TOR ************************************************************************** WEEK 13/14 RESULTS: Buffalo 3, at Brooklyn 5 BRK Maxim Afinogenov - It can be best summed up this way. "Welcome home, Peter." Peter Bondra will once again don Gulag black and blue. Bondra was re-acquired from Quebec in exchange for winger Bill Guerin, who had himself only been acquired from Lyndonville the day before. "This puts to rest one of the bigger goofs in my tenure here," said Tsuruoka. "I made the mistake of trading Peter away earlier this year and I paid through the nose to get him back, but that's the price of making a mistake in this business. We're really going to miss the guys we had to give up - Bertuzzi, Legwand, & Kevyn Adams - but frankly, things just haven't been the same around here with Peter gone, and I don't think he's been quite right without us." Said Bondra, "The organization and the fans in Quebec were very good to me. They tried hard to make me feel welcome - but this is home." The departure of Bertuzzi, Legwand, and Adams will mean increased roles for young centers Andre Savage and Glen Metropolit, and a likely return to the lineup for feisty winger Joe Murphy. The forgotten man in the deal for Bondra is Mike Knuble. Knuble, acquired with Bill Guerin from Lyndonville is expected to assume immediate duties on the checking unit with veteran grinders Kelly Buchberger and Steve Konowalchuk. "He's a competitor," said Tsuruoka, "and as anyone who has watched this team over the years knows is that the guys who work the hardest get the lion's share of the ice time." Rumor Mill ---------- Trade winds continue to swirl around young right winger Maxim Afinogenov. Despite a strong showing over the past few weeks it's still possible that the 20-year-old could be traded for a proven center. ************************************************************************** INCENTIVE POINTS: Brooklyn, -1 IP - team report ACCUMULATED IP: Brooklyn: -2 IP Long Island: -6 IP ************************************************************************** PLAYER OF THE WEEK: THE NOMINEES: VAN Patrik Elias - the Scouts continue to roll, and winger Elias (four goals, five assists) is a big reason why. A pair of four-point games this week. RHC Brendan Shanahan - seven goals and an assist for the power forward, as the Comets fight for playoff positioning. FLO Martin Straka - Straka's struggled a bit this year, and even failed to make the annual All-Star Game. However, the winger is beginning to pick things up, as evidenced by his five goal, two assist, performance this biweek. THE WINNER: Shanahan. Besides always being a great quote, Shanny provides the spark for the Comets, and his play has invigorated oldster Ron Francis. Comets for the Cup? PAST WINNERS: (1/2) Doug Gilmour, LW, Seattle Rainiers (6 goals, 10 assists, +11) (3/4) Steve Thomas, W, Toronto Arenas (4 goals, 6 assists) (5/6) Sandis Ozolinsh, D, Vancouver Scouts (1 goal, 7 assists, +4) (7/8) Eric Lindros, C, Topeka Scarecrows (7 goals, 5 assists, -2) (9/10) Simon Gagne, C, Houston Outlaws (5 goals, 5 assists, +4) (11/12) Brian Savage, RW, Seattle Rainiers (6 goals, 2 assists, +0) (13/14) Brendan Shanahan, LW, Rush-Henrietta Comets (7 goals, 1 assist, +2) ************************************************************************** GOALIE OF THE WEEK: THE NOMINEES: BRK Olaf Kolzig - Olie the Goalie might need some help from the offense, but the Gulag netminder will continue to shine regardless. Although he went 1-4-1, Kolzig stopped 91.8 of the shots he saw (24/39 IR), allowing fifteen goals on 183 shots, including a 0-0 overtime tie with Lyndonville. BUF Patrick Lalime - many Bulldog fans worried when the team traded stalwart Tommy Salo to the other conference, but Lalime is starting to show some of the signs displayed as a rookie back in 1997-98. Lalime had a pair of one-goal outings for the 'Dogs, who haven't given up on the season just yet. LYN Steve Shields - talk about a week! Shields went 5-0-1 for the Blades, allowing a scant *three* goals on 158 shots! After recording shutouts in three of his six games, Shields capped off his biweek by being dealt to the Vancouver Scouts. THE WINNER: Shields. C'mon, it isn't even really that close here. In fact, if it weren't for fellow nominee Kolzig, Shields would have been 6-0 for the biweek.
