Pavol Demitra, who has scored a total of eighty-five goals for the Indianapolis-Capital City organization over his first two years in the N, was traded to the Farley Cup contender Houston Outlaws. While the Outlaws also receive Andreas Dackell, Trevor Letowski and a pick, the cost was high for Eric Goodman's club - besides a middle-first-round selection in this summer's draft, the Cougars get defenseman Mathieu Schneider and centre Viktor Kozlov, who had a breakout year with Buffalo in 1999-2000, but has struggled this season. However, he's still only 26. Another contender, the Long Island Berserkers, added depth to their playoff roster with the addition of gritty forward Dallas Drake to the club. The Cougars, stockpiling young talent, received young gem Aki Berg in return. The Drayton Valley Drillers, in search of a true #1 netminder after the faltering of Mike Vernon, send youngster Dan Cloutier to the Vancouver Scouts for Byron Dafoe. Dafoe, who won 40 for the Scouts last season, struggled in training camp and has sat, first behind Sean Burke and now behind Steve Shields. It is rumoured that the Seattle Rainiers, concerned about goaltending depth, made a strong push for Indianapolis Racer netminder Martin Biron, but the deal was squashed by JJ Schrems. Rainier brass would neither confirm nor deny the rumour, but the club has expressed dissatisfaction with the play of incumbent Jamie Storr. ************************************************************************** WEEK 23/24 IN REVIEW: Once again, the defending-champion Long Island Berserkers paced the league, going 5-1-0 to run their four-week record to an impressive 11-1-0! The Berserkers now lead the NSHL standings, with two more wins than the Houston Comets. Goaltenders Chris Osgood and Jose Theodore set the tone for the islanders with three blankings, including back-to-back shutouts of Vancouver and Manayunk. Both the Berserkers and Comets stand with magic numbers of one, and could clinch postseason berths as early as later this week. Nearly as impressive this biweek was another former champ, the Brooklyn Gulag, who went 4-1-1 and sit on the edge of a playoff berth - if the season were to end today, the Gulag would be eliminated, based on having fewer wins than the Lyndonville Blades. However, if the Gulag do make it in, no one wants to draw them in the first round. "We've always had trouble there," said Seattle Rainier captain Trevor Linden, whose team reprised their five-game 1998 Farley Cup Finals loss with a 5-3 defeat last Wednesday. After advancing to the Farley Cup Finals last spring, Fort Garry owner Murray Moman conducted a fire sale, offing future Hall-of-Famers Raymond Bourque and Dominik Hasek, among others, opting to concentrate on building young talent. Looking at the bright side, the team should have some more youngsters to cultivate, going 0-3-3 this biweek to place them just four points ahead of the league-trailing Buffalo Bulldogs (2-4 this biweek) in the overall standings. Winnipeg fans needn't fear, however - the last time the Crabs took a nosedive in the standings, they followed up with a trip to the Finals. ************************************************************************** NSHL LEAGUE STANDINGS: NORTHEAST DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Long Island Berserkers 72 45 23 4 94 0.653 233 164 28- 7- 1 17-16- 3 Rush-Henrietta Comets 72 31 30 11 73 0.507 190 207 16-12- 8 15-18- 3 Lyndonville Blades 72 30 32 10 70 0.486 172 188 19-13- 4 11-19- 6 Brooklyn Gulag 72 28 30 14 70 0.486 191 178 21- 7- 8 7-23- 6 Buffalo Bulldogs 72 18 42 12 48 0.333 144 207 11-18- 7 7-24- 5 ATLANTIC DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Montreal Wanderers 72 39 22 11 89 0.618 186 150 20-12- 4 19-10- 7 Florida Hellcats 72 33 26 13 79 0.549 208 179 16-15- 5 17-11- 8 Indianapolis Racers 72 24 39 9 57 0.396 177 237 14-18- 4 10-21- 5 Manayunk Bullies 72 22 42 8 52 0.361 167 234 13-19- 4 9-23- 4 Quebec Polar Sphinx 72 22 42 8 52 0.361 166 220 14-18- 4 8-24- 4 NORTHWEST DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Vancouver Scouts 72 38 19 15 91 0.632 241 174 24- 7- 5 14-12-10 Seattle Rainiers 72 39 27 6 84 0.583 247 204 22-11- 3 17-16- 3 Seattle Sasquatch 72 36 26 10 82 0.569 204 192 20- 9- 7 16-17- 3 Drayton Valley Drillers 72 23 35 14 60 0.417 195 232 11-16- 9 12-19- 5 Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs 72 21 41 10 52 0.361 170 222 14-17- 5 7-24- 5 MIDWEST DIVISION GP W L T PTS Pct GF GA HOME AWAY Houston Outlaws 72 43 21 8 94 0.653 202 137 22-10- 4 21-11- 4 Topeka Scarecrows 72 36 30 6 78 0.542 258 229 18-16- 2 18-14- 4 Cabbagetown Red Rockets 72 34 30 8 76 0.528 226 207 20-12- 4 14-18- 4 Capital City Cougars 72 33 34 5 71 0.493 205 226 22-12- 2 11-22- 3 Toronto Arenas 72 29 33 10 68 0.472 207 202 14-16- 6 15-17- 4 ************************************************************************** 2000-01 NSHL SCHEDULE (WEEK TWENTY-FIVE): (home team is listed FIRST in all instances) 2001/04/19 LIB FLO 2001/04/19 CCC FGF 2001/04/19 RHC MON 2001/04/19 CRR SEA 2001/04/19 BUF MAN 2001/04/19 HOU VAN 2001/04/19 LYN QPS 2001/04/19 TOR DVD 2001/04/20 BRK IND 2001/04/20 TPK SES 2001/04/20 LIB CCC 2001/04/21 FLO FGF 2001/04/21 RHC CRR 2001/04/21 MON SEA 2001/04/21 BUF HOU 2001/04/21 MAN VAN 2001/04/21 QPS LYN 2001/04/22 DVD TOR 2001/04/22 IND BRK 2001/04/22 SES TPK 2001/04/23 TOR LYN 2001/04/23 DVD QPS 2001/04/23 TPK BRK 2001/04/23 SES IND 2001/04/24 LYN TOR 2001/04/24 QPS DVD 2001/04/24 LIB FGF 2001/04/24 FLO CCC 2001/04/24 RHC SEA 2001/04/24 MON CRR 2001/04/24 BUF VAN 2001/04/24 MAN HOU 2001/04/25 LYN DVD 2001/04/25 QPS TOR 2001/04/25 CCC LIB 2001/04/26 FGF FLO 2001/04/26 CRR RHC 2001/04/26 SEA MON 2001/04/26 HOU BUF 2001/04/26 VAN MAN 2001/04/27 BRK SES 2001/04/27 IND TPK 2001/04/27 CCC FLO 2001/04/27 FGF LIB 2001/04/27 CRR MON 2001/04/27 SEA RHC 2001/04/27 HOU MAN 2001/04/27 VAN BUF 2001/04/28 TOR QPS 2001/04/28 DVD LYN 2001/04/28 TPK IND 2001/04/28 SES BRK 2001/04/29 BRK TPK 2001/04/29 IND SES 2001/04/29 FLO LIB 2001/04/30 FGF CCC 2001/04/30 MON RHC 2001/04/30 SEA CRR 2001/04/30 MAN BUF 2001/04/30 VAN HOU ************************************************************************** WEEK 23/24 RESULTS: Cabbagetown 1, at Brooklyn 3 BRK Joe Murphy - the enigmatic right wing is starting to heat up once again, scoring ten points (three goals) and a massive +7 for the Gulag, who went 4-1-1 on the biweek. CCC Pavol Demitra - the newest member of the Houston Outlaws finished his career in Nebraska with a bang, scoring four times and adding two assists for the possibly postseason-bound Cougars. CRR Phil Housley - a terrific performance from Housley, who's starting to show the leadership expected of him when picked up back in 1998. Two goals and seven assists for the backliner. SEA Jaromir Jagr - yes, each biweek I just leave Jags here. But with five more goals, and five more assists, on the week, who can blame me? Before you fill out your Gretzky Trophy ballots, consider that the league's leading scorer has been named one of the game's three stars in over half of Seattle's contests. TOR Paul Kariya - It was just a question of time before the Arenas, behind Kariya and Martin Brodeur, began to compete for the Farley Cup, and that time is now. Five goals and a helper for the pint-sized portsider. BRK Alexander Korolyuk - Bondra's linemate, whom owner Jeff Tsuruoka tried unsuccessfully to deal to four separate teams, scored seven goals and three assists, finding a new home on a line with "Peter Gun". SES Mikael Renberg - People laughed when Scott Shigemi traded for the struggling winger. Oh, how they laughed. Heh, heh (sorry). However, Renberg stepped in immediately and gave results (one goal, three assists) in his return to the Emerald City. RHC Gary Roberts - Not bad for an oldster - Roberts scored four goals and two assists for the Comets, who need every goal they can get while they chase their own postseason berth. THE WINNER: Korolyuk. Two weeks ago, he felt unwanted, but now, Alex is on top of the world. Although he'll need to stretch to reach career-highs, the diminutive right wing is starting to show why he was taken in the second round back in 1999. PAST WINNERS: (1/2) Doug Gilmour, LW, Seattle Rainiers (6 goals, 10 assists, +11) (3/4) Steve Thomas, W, Toronto Arenas (4 goals, 6 assists) (5/6) Sandis Ozolinsh, D, Vancouver Scouts (1 goal, 7 assists, +4) (7/8) Eric Lindros, C, Topeka Scarecrows (7 goals, 5 assists, -2) (9/10) Simon Gagne, C, Houston Outlaws (5 goals, 5 assists, +4) (11/12) Brian Savage, RW, Seattle Rainiers (6 goals, 2 assists, +0) (13/14) Brendan Shanahan, LW, Rush-Henrietta Comets (7 goals, 1 assist, +2) (15/16) Jaromir Jagr, RW, Seattle Rainiers (7 goals, 4 assists, +6) (17/18) Patrice Brisebois, D, Manayunk Bullies (0 goals, 9 assists, +6) (19/20) Marian Hossa, RW, Drayton Valley Drillers (3 goals, 7 assists, +9) (21/22) Zigmund Palffy, RW, Long Island Berserkers (7 goals, 2 assists, +6) (23/24) Alexander Korolyuk, RW, Brooklyn Gulag (7 goals, 3 assists, +4) ************************************************************************** GOALIE OF THE WEEK: THE NOMINEES: IND Martin Biron - the Racers will need a lot of help to advance to the postseason for the first time in four seasons, but signs of future promise have started in net, where the 23-year-old went 2-2-0, stopping 124 of 131 shots (13/20 IR), helping his team stave off elimination for another two weeks. SES Dominik Hasek - running third in the tightest division in hockey, the Sasquatch rely on their Dominator to push themselves. A perfect 3-0 for Dom, allowing just *three* goals on 62 shots (8/11 IR), including a 22-save shutout of the Cabbagetown Red Rockets. BRK Olaf Kolzig - In perhaps the best single-game performance by a netminder this year, Olie the Goalie stopped all 34 shots he faced, defeating the powerful, league-leading Houston Outlaws, 1-0, at the Compaq Center in Houston. For the biweek, Kolzig went 3-1-1 with a 92.9% save percentage (20/31 IR). BUF Patrick Lalime - Lalime notched back-to-back shutouts of Indianapolis (1-0) and Fort Garry (3-0) as the Buffalo Bulldogs held off the Reaper. Over the last two weeks, Lalime stopped all but five of 105 shots (7/12 IR). LIB Chris Osgood - Ozzie was responsible for two of the Berserkers' league-leading three shutouts this biweek, denying both Vancouver (1-0) and Manayunk (3-0) as his club ran its four-week record to a death-defying 11-1. Osgood stopped 117 of 126 shots overall, including 16 of 25 in-range shots. THE WINNER: Osgood.
