Let's start with the matchup between Lyndonville and Corner Creek - with teams situated on either side of the Atlantic, this series easily featured the greatest amount of travel. Amidst a Sports Illustrated report that Lyndonville owner Mark McNeil would be stepping down following the season, the Blades struggled against a gritty Corner Creek squad, who took a two-games-to-one series lead when Roman Turek stopped thirty-six shots in a 3-1 win. However, the Blades rebounded to win Games Four and Five, but fell in Game Six as Turek came up big again. It would come down to a seventh game; not only that, but two overtimes for these weary squads, before player of the series Mats Sundin scored his second just eleven seconds into the second overtime. The Drayton Valley Drillers also advanced in their first postseason series, thanks largely to the league's all-time win leader Dominik Hasek, who is still looking for his first Farley Cup. Hasek was named a star in five of the series' seven games, most notably in Game Seven, when his twenty-five save performance shot down the second-seeded Rainiers. The other conference's seventh seed advanced to the semifinals, although not nearly as dramatically, as the Florida Hellcats defeated the #2 Montreal Wanderers in five games. It looked like it would be easy work for Montreal, looking to advance to their third consecutive Farley Cup Finals, when Patrick Roy's thirty-save effort propelled them to a 5-0 win. However, Florida would win four consecutive games from that point forward, culminating in a 3-1 win at the Forum, as Marty Turco registered his own thirty-save performance, and Mike LeClerc sealed the deal. In another upset, the eighth-seeded St. Michael's Privateers ended hopes of a Farley Cup repeat in short order, knocking off the top-seeded Long Island Berserkers in six games. Due to arena difficulties, the Berserkers' home games had to be moved to Madison Square Garden, and they surrendered Game One, 5-3, to St. Michael's. The remainder of the series held to form, with each team winning on their own ice and the Privateers winning in six. Matt Cooke had the series-winning goal, and Martin Biron recorded twenty-seven saves for the victors. The top seed in the West, the Topeka Scarecrows, had no trouble advancing, after an initial 2-1 hiccup to Fort Garry. To be fair, it was the Crabs' Roberto Luongo who stole that game (44 saves, 14/15 GR), but he couldn't carry the team the rest of the way as Topeka won the next four, the last on a Daniel Alfredsson overtime marker. Topeka will face the Drillers in the Western Conference semis (the only series set thus far). In a tightly-contested series contested entirely on NetMeeting, the fifth-seed Houston Outlaws moved past #4 Toronto in six games, winning Games Four and Five in overtime (on goals from Sami Kapanen and Patrik Elias) before closing the series out in Game Six with a 2-1 win. Jeff O'Neill got the winner. In series yet to be concluded, the Buffalo Bulldogs hold a three-games-to-two advantage over Quebec City, and expansion San Francisco is tied with Toms River, three games apiece. ************************************************************************** NSHL POSTSEASON TROPHY NOMINEES: The following are the nominees for each of the NSHL's postseason awards, (other than the Beliveau Trophy, of course).
