The Berserkers went 4-4, including a 1-3 mark away from Nassau Coliseum, and now must worry about not only the Blades, but the Brooklyn Gulag, who also went 7-1 over Week 11/12 and now sit just seven points back. Completing an impressive Northeast Division trifecta, the Corner Creek Green Calves went 6-2 to close in on the East's eight and final playoff position. Curiously, the Calves then traded their top scoring, left wing Brendan Shanahan, to the Gulag for Brian Gionta and a first-round draft choice. In the Atlantic, the Manayunk Bullies are giving Philadelphia fans something to follow other than the football Eagles, going 5-1-2 to climb into the conference's sixth seed. Can they keep it up? For more on Manayunk, see the team report below. Out West, the biggest story is the "perfect" 0-8 week for the Seattle Sasquatch, who are experiencing lows not faced by the team since they were the expansion Detroit LugNuts - and perhaps not even then. Otherwise, western Canadian fans are enjoying the fierce battle between Drayton Valley and second-year Vancouver for the conference's final tournament position. Vancouver improved their position markedly by picking up defenseman Sami Salo from Capital City earlier this week. More on this trade below. Interestingly enough, the Drillers and Whitecaps have tied all four meetings between them in 2003-04. ************************************************************************** BLUELINER SALO SENT NORTH TO VANCOUVER: For the majority of the season thus far, the Cougars have stuck with the same lineup and it has worked for them. Now getting into the thick of the 2003-04 NSHL season, Capital City is tweaking things here and there to move their pursuit of a playoff spot into the next gear. Citing depth in the right side of their defense and wanting to make room for some others to get playing time, the Cougars dealt Sami Salo to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Monday afternoon. In addition to Salo, a 7th round pick in the 2004 draft was sent and in return, Vancouver sent a 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft. "Sami was playing on the 3rd line behind Niedermayer and Aucoin, but just wasn't producing as much as we had hoped he would by this point," said Cougars GM Brian Leahy. Salo had 3 goals and 2 assists and had played in all 48 games for the team so far. The trade will open up opportunities for playing time for other defensemen such as Bryan Marchment, Radek Martinek and Joe Corvo. After the trade was announced, Leahy was making inquiries around the league offering the newly acquired 2nd round pick to fill the roster spot made vacant by Salo's departure. A source close to the team stated that there are discussions currently going on with a few teams regarding trading the pick, but that they are still open to any offers at this time. UNSUNG HERO Ron Francis, C. Coming over last June in a trade with Topeka, Francis has centered the top line for the Cougars. He wasn't acquired for his goal scoring, but rather his passing and his defensive play with the puck. He has lived up to management's expectations and let linemate Marian Gaborik get all of the spotlight with his goal scoring. Francis currently has 6 goals and 23 assists, but he leads the Cougars with a +30 rating through 48 games. NOTEBOOK The Cougars hit a speed bump in Week 11/12, going just 3-5-0 and got shutout 3 times including once at home. The shutouts were close games, with two of them being 2-0 and one being a 1-0 game...Center Andrew Cassels will miss the team's home game against the Seattle Rainiers due to a pulled abdomninal muscle. ************************************************************************** BULLIES RING IN THE NEW YEAR by Lee Yelshin, Manayunk owner This last set of games presented Manayunk with three at home after the New Year. The new calendar has been good to the Bullies, as they narrowly won each. So a mediocre 1-1-2-0 for the last of December winds up 4-1-2-0 (with one game in December not reported yet). 2004 was barely two days old when Capital City came to visit. Nolan brings the Cougars up to a 2-2 tie early in the third, but Sanderson nets the Bullies a 2-3 win. Two days later, it was a clean game with Minneapolis (only three power plays). The Massasauga open the scoring, then tie it after two from the Bullies. Modry brings the lead back home halfway through the second. Minneapolis misses two splits and Modry's tally stands as the game winner. Manayunk's home games end one day later as the Hampton Road Hounds come in for a visit. The Bullies jump out to a 0-4 lead but the Hounds get back within one by the end of this nail-biter game. As for next year, the player that are skating are doing pretty well (spirits of the defense rating willing). I'm just short a few more than I'd like to be (especially considering I have only one skating goalie - who's currently out of order). So here's hoping for a continued successful new year for the Bullies (and the rest of you - just a little less so!). ************************************************************************** 2003-04 REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE STANDINGS: NORTHEAST DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Lyndonville Blades 48 32 12 3 1 68 0.708 168 111 14- 7- 2- 1 18- 5- 1- 0 Long Island Berserkers 48 32 14 2 0 66 0.688 170 128 19- 5- 0- 0 13- 9- 2- 0 Brooklyn Gulag 48 26 15 7 0 59 0.615 135 112 15- 8- 1- 0 11- 7- 6- 0 Buffalo Bulldogs 48 23 20 5 0 51 0.531 146 129 8-12- 4- 0 15- 8- 1- 0 Corner Creek Green Cal 48 21 23 1 3 46 0.479 127 136 9-12- 0- 3 12-11- 1- 0 New York Lancers 48 9 34 2 3 23 0.240 92 174 5-18- 0- 1 4-16- 2- 2 ATLANTIC DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Florida Hellcats 48 30 12 6 0 66 0.688 162 97 14- 6- 4- 0 16- 6- 2- 0 Toms River Lightning 48 28 15 5 0 61 0.635 147 117 15- 5- 4- 0 13-10- 1- 0 Manayunk Bullies 48 24 16 6 2 56 0.583 108 100 13- 8- 3- 0 11- 8- 3- 2 Montreal Wanderers 48 23 15 7 3 56 0.583 141 117 13- 7- 2- 2 10- 8- 5- 1 Quebec City Patriotes 48 16 23 7 2 41 0.427 122 145 7-12- 4- 1 9-11- 3- 1 St. Michael's Privatee 48 17 27 4 0 38 0.396 119 140 7-16- 1- 0 10-11- 3- 0 NORTHWEST DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Seattle Rainiers 48 29 14 5 0 63 0.656 154 111 16- 6- 2- 0 13- 8- 3- 0 North Calgary Hawks 48 26 17 5 0 57 0.594 150 139 13- 7- 4- 0 13-10- 1- 0 Fort Garry Fiddler Cra 48 23 17 5 3 54 0.562 153 137 11- 8- 3- 2 12- 9- 2- 1 Drayton Valley Driller 48 18 22 7 1 44 0.458 113 139 9-10- 4- 1 9-12- 3- 0 Vancouver Whitecaps 48 18 22 8 0 44 0.458 124 155 9-11- 4- 0 9-11- 4- 0 Seattle Sasquatch 48 8 35 4 1 21 0.219 102 181 4-17- 3- 0 4-18- 1- 1 CENTRAL DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Topeka Scarecrows 48 27 14 6 1 61 0.635 159 117 16- 5- 3- 0 11- 9- 3- 1 Capital City Cougars 48 23 16 7 2 55 0.573 162 114 15- 6- 2- 1 8-10- 5- 1 Houston Outlaws 48 21 19 7 1 50 0.521 126 130 11- 9- 4- 0 10-10- 3- 1 Hampton Roads Hounds 48 20 20 7 1 48 0.500 136 146 13- 6- 5- 0 7-14- 2- 1 San Francisco Hedgehog 48 17 27 3 1 38 0.396 133 165 12-12- 0- 0 5-15- 3- 1 Minneapolis Massasauga 48 4 41 3 0 11 0.115 58 167 2-20- 2- 0 2-21- 1- 0 ************************************************************************** 2003-04 WEEK ELEVEN/TWELVE RESULTS: Houston 0, at Brooklyn 4 BRK Pasi Nurminen - At the forefront is number thirty-two, netminder Roman Cechmanek, who had three games with perfect GR results (10/10 in a 2-0 win over Fort Garry, 7/7 in a 1-1 tie at the Rainiers, and 5/5 in a 2-1 win at Topeka), being particularly solid in picking up three points in games at the West's top two teams. Brooklyn's Olaf Kolzig and Lyndonville's Jocelyn Thibault also put forth solid efforts in Week 11/12. ************************************************************************** 2003-04 WEEK THIRTEEN/FOURTEEN SCHEDULE AND INJURIES: Numbers in parentheses represent man-games lost to injury during the upcoming biweek, and for the entire season to date.
