As soon as this is sent, I'll be headed to the rink to play consecutive games in goal, and I figured that you'd all want the newsletter before the start of the weekend. Yes, it's late. Now you know why I was so grumpy on Monday about games being late. My advice if you received incentive points this week would be to suck it up. Four incentive points certainly isn't going to kill you. However, if you'd like to appeal them to the Review Board, you're more than welcome to do so. Please get your computer managers out as soon as possible. For the end of this block, I implore you to get your games in on time (or even a day or two early if possible). I leave for Seattle on Thursday the 21st, and therefore my time that week is critical. Thank you in advance. ************************************************************************** WEEK SEVEN/EIGHT IN REVIEW: Even though the trade deadline is several months away, a high number of transactions were consummated this biweek. The most notable shows that the St. Michael's Privateers are planning to make a run in a relatively-weak Eastern Conference, acquiring Brad Richards and Antoine Vermette from Topeka. In return, the Tarantulas pick up four highly-touted prospects and a second-rounder. Both teams have newsletter articles discussing the move in this week's edition, so enjoy! If you're interested in hosting the 2007 NSHL All-Star Game this winter, please respond to me within the biweek. So far, Minneapolis is the solid front-runner for this prestigious event. Some fantastic performances in goal this past biweek! To wit, note Olaf Kolzig's forty-eight save shutout in Brooklyn's 3-0 victory over the Green Calves in Corner Creek. Lyndonville - who beat league power Houston this week - fell victim to the hot goaltender twice in Week 7/8. First, Marc-Andre Fleury posted a 41-save shutout in a 2-0 Buffalo win, then Ilya Bryzgalov notched forty saves (7/8 GR) in a 3-2 win for the Lancers. The snakebit Blades face both teams again in the next two weeks. The Lyndonville game was Houston's only regulation loss of the biweek, as the Outlaws went 6-1-0-1 to expand their Central Division league to nine points. But they could not gain any ground on the conference-leading North Calgary Hawks, who matched their record win-for-win and now stand at forty-eight points. In the "Where Did He Come From?" category, 2006 third-rounder Lee Stempniak put up a hat trick and added an assist in Stone Harbor's 5-2 win in Manayunk. Stempniak now has seven goals and 20 points on the season. First-overall selection Alexander Ovechkin now leads the NSHL with twenty-nine goals in thirty-one games for the Brooklyn Fourteenth. Ovechkin was named one of the game's three stars (as selected by the league) in six of Brooklyn's eight games this biweek, as the Fourteenth went 6-1-0-1 to climb to the top of the Northeast Division. ************************************************************************** PRIVATEERS GEAR UP FOR CUP by Andy Bartalone, St. Michael's owner DECEMBER 1 - The word around Tighlmann Island is that the Privateers are making a run for the Farley Cup this year. And this week they pulled off a trade with Topeka, sending a good portion of thier 2006 draft and a couple of other pieces for two top notch forwards in the league. St. Michael's appears to be making a move to go deep in the playoffs and this week traded forwards Gilbert Brule, Andrei Kostitsyn and Chuck Kobasew and young rearguard Shea Weber as well as thier 2nd round pick in 2007 for Brad Richards and Antione Vermette. Richards and Vermette are both solid goal scorers, and they both add to the defensive accumen of the forwards. Richards will wear an A along with Danius Zubrus, Wade Redden and Tony Amonte. St. Michael's will have thier annual "Skate with the Team" outing the week between Christmas and New Years. All season ticket holders are welcome to join us for the evening. ************************************************************************** TOPEKA TEARDOWN CONTINUES by Doug North, Topeka owner Tarantula GM Doug North continued his breakup of the Topeka hockey club with the trade of Brad Richards and Antoine Vermette to St. Michael's. In return, Topeka got a ton of young potential in defenseman Shea Weber and forwards Gilbert Brule, Chuck Kobasew, and Andrei Kostitsyn. Topeka also gets St. Michael's' second-round pick in next year's draft. With this deal, North has now acquired nine of the top 44 picks in the 2006 draft. Many experts believe it had the most talent of any draft in NSHL history. They include the following players (followed by their age and slot in the draft): Alex Steen 22 9th overall Zach Parise 22 10th overall Gilbert Brule 19 15th overall Corey Perry 21 23rd overall Rusty Olesz 20 35th overall Andrew Ladd 20 39th overall Shea Weber 21 41st overall Rene Bourque 24 42nd overall (acquired in trade with MIN for Nik Hagman) Andrei Kostitsyn 21 44th overall "We know this is tough for our fans because we've been spoiled for a number of years with the talent that has been on the ice," said North. "However, I truly believe when we look back five years from now that it will be worth it. If we were to tear this thing apart and rebuild, this was the year to do it. We have a solid nucleus of young players. Some of them have the potential to be all-stars down the road. They'll be getting a baptism of fire as we're not going to send these guys down to the minors. They are going to play and learn together with the big club." In another minor deal, North sent Aaron Ward and Tomas Kopecky packing to Vancouver. Topeka received back Ossi Vaananen and Thomas Pock. Ward was one of the few skaters left over 30 years of age. The only ones left are Jarkko Ruutu, Eric Boguniecki, Jassen Cullimore and Alexander Khavanov. The Spiders now have twenty skaters who are 24 years or younger. ************************************************************************** WEEK SEVEN/EIGHT RESULTS: Topeka 1, at Brooklyn 2 BRK Olaf Kolzig -
