Eric joined us seven years ago (has it really been that long?) and has been at or near the top of the league for his entire tenure. His magnum opus was surely capturing the 2001 Farley Cup championship in his rookie season, defeating the Montreal Wanderers in six games. He has also served us well as a fair and just vice-commissioner, and has been of immeasurable help to yours truly. Eric's official resignation notice follows in the newsletter; however, with the number of things in this newsletter, I wanted this to be at the top of the list. Eric will still be helping out with a few things, but I wanted to publicly thank him for his efforts and proclaim that if he ever wants a spot in the NSHL again, we'll make room for him, no questions asked. I've never understood the expression "a door closing is a door opening", but in this case, it's certainly true. Please welcome Mike Kuduk to the league as our newest owner - Mike's done great work as an associate, most recently helping out Steve Beren with the day-to-day activities of the New York Lancers. Unless things have changed since we talked last, Mike plans to keep the franchise in Houston but will change the team name to the Aeros, a nod to the city's first major professional hockey franchise in the 1970s. Please welcome Mike to the league with the traditional offering of crappy trade offerings and roster movement suggestions. We also need a vice-commissioner for 2007-08, so I would like anyone interested in the position to apply to me directly by June 15th. Particularly considering my time constraints this fall (government bid work in Jacksonville), we especially need someone who can help the league continue the growth we've made over the past ten years. Other than that, there are no qualifications necessary in particular. Let me know if you're interested! Also get your amendment proposals to Patrick Shea by June 15th. Please e-mail either of us with any questions or comments. Thanks! Also, trades are once again allowed and roster sizes are unlimited until the NSHL entry draft in September (unless a constitutional amendment changes things in the meantime. Happy trading! Two big ones already with some big names changing hands! Enjoy a lot of great articles this week, including ones from Jeff Tsuruoka and Chris Malitsky. ************************************************************************** RAINIERS TAKE 2007 CUP, SECOND IN THREE SEASONS In the NSHL's anniversary tenth season, it was one of the league's original teams taking home the Farley Cup after the Seattle Rainiers defeated the Brooklyn Fourteenth in five games. In a rematch of the 1998 Finals (won by Brooklyn), the Rainiers controlled the first game of the series, won 6-1 by the home team. In this contest, Alexander Ovechkin and Mike Fisher would begin what would prove to be a series-long rivalry, picking up fighting majors and roughing minors. Olaf Kolzig was solid in the first two periods (6/7 GR) before faltering in the third. Game Two looked to be much better for the Fourteenth as they held a 3-2 lead early in the third period. However, goals by Alex Tanguay and Patrick Marleau would give the Rainiers the edge and a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Controversy erupted after the game, when it was determined that Marleau's goal was scored on an undeserved power play, after referee Mick McGeough mistakenly called Mike Commodore for tripping Ladislav Nagy. In actuality, Nagy was tripped by linesman Kevin Collins. The series shifted to Brooklyn for Game Three, and evidently both teams' sticks were lost in transit. Dwayne Roloson and Olaf Kolzig matched one another save for save all night - eventually, Dany Heatley's late first-period goal would hold up as the game winner in a 1-0 Seattle win. Roloson would stop all four Goalie Ratings, while Kolzig was 5-for-6. Facing elimination on home ice, the Fourteenth gave everything they had in Game Four, and it showed in a 6-2 drubbing. Jeremy Roenick returned for the first time in weeks, and he seemed to jumpstart the heretofore-moribund Brooklyn offense. Ovechkin finally broke loose, scoring three power play goals, while Michael Nylander added four assists. The next day, it was learned that Fisher sustained a broken foot blocking a shot in the first period. Although he finished the game, he was unable to get a skate over the injury and was forced from the remainder of the series. Back in Seattle, Game Five proved to be more of a coronation for the home club, with the Rainiers moving out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 7-1 victory. Continuing their balanced scoring attack, seven Seattle players scored goals, led by Andy McDonald's goal and three assists. The handshake line was respectful on both sides, particularly after such a hard-fought and penalty-filled series. Roloson and Kolzig talked for a long time, as did Northeast natives Chris Drury and Jeremy Roenick. Perhaps most importantly, Alexander Ovechkin went to the Seattle bench to talk with injured Seattle forward Mike Fisher. "He's a great kid, and he's going to score a lot of goals in this league. The NSHL couldn't ask for a better ambassador to the league," remarked Fisher, who fought Ovechkin tooth and nail until his foot injury sidelined him. Seattle owner Doug Norris was nothing but complimentary towards the Fourteenth. "Jeff (Tsuruoka) has put together a great roster. A lot of people scoffed when he dealt as much as he did to get (Ovechkin), but you can't argue with the results. They're going to be a force for as long as JT's in the league." As Norris (also the commissioner) handed the Cup to captain Chris Drury, the Key Arena crowd thundered to attention. "The last time (the Rainiers won the Cup), it was on Miami ice," said Drury to the crowd. "But this is twice as nice as Miami ice," as the crowd erupted in cheers. Forty-five minutes later, the Rainiers had finally finished their parade around the ice and retreated to their dressing room. Joe Nieuwendyk was awarded the Jean Beliveau Trophy as the most valuable player in the Farley Cup playoffs, scoring ten goals and twenty-nine points despite missing three Rainier contests. Perhaps more importantly, he won 74% of 121 faceoffs while matching up against some of the league's top faceoff artists. Nieuwendyk, picked up midseason by the Rainiers, also won the Farley Cup as a member of the 2003 Lyndonville Blades. 2007 FARLEY CUP CHAMPION SEATTLE RAINIERS Doug Norris (owner/head coach), Jacques Cloutier (assistant coach), Brian Skrudland (assistant coach), Ian Young (assistant coach), Rick Kehoe (director of player personnel), Chris Drury (captain), Patrick Marleau (alternate captain), Ed Jovanovski (alternate captain), Bryan Allen, Nick Boynton, Andrew Brunette, Jonathan Cheechoo, Chris Chelios, Mike Fisher, Dany Heatley, Frantisek Kaberle, Antti Laaksonen, Andy McDonald, Ladislav Nagy, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mark Parrish, Brian Rafalski, Dwayne Roloson, Mike Sillinger, Jaroslav Spacek, Alex Tanguay, Vesa Toskala, Stephen Weiss. Remember when viewing these results that all of these are finalists, and a low vote total here is indicative of absolutely nothing. Everyone listed here is one of the tops in the league, and should be proud. Alexander Ovechkin of the Brooklyn Fourteenth takes home the Gretzky Trophy in a landslide victory. Ovechkin, who put up 71 goals and 125 points, is the first Brooklyn player and the first rookie to take the league's most valuable player award. GRETZKY TROPHY (Awarded to the league's most valuable player) BRK Alexander Ovechkin 8 SEA Jonathan Cheechoo 1 NCH Miikka Kiprusoff 1 VAW Sidney Crosby 0 This one was a close one...but Roberto Luongo of the Fort Garry Fiddler Crabs takes his second consecutive Sawchuk Trophy as the league's top netminder. Luongo went 49-26 with a 91.3% save percentage, 2.61 goals-against average and eleven (!) shutouts. SAWCHUK TROPHY (Awarded to the league's top goaltender) FGF Roberto Luongo 3 NCH Miikka Kiprusoff 2 BRK Olaf Kolzig 2 HOU Tomas Vokoun 2 Eventually they're going to just rename this thing. Nicklas Lidstrom of the Houston Outlaws takes his fifth Orr Trophy as the league's top blueliner. In 2006-07, Lidstrom scored sixteen times and added 89 helpers, and was a plus sixty-four as the Outlaws went 56-16-10. ORR TROPHY (Awarded to the league's top defenseman) HOU Nicklas Lidstrom 4 QCP Tomas Kaberle 2 BUF Dion Phaneuf 2 PIT Scott Niedermayer 1 HOU Chris Pronger 1 CCC Mathieu Schneider 0 As you may have already guessed at this point, Ovechkin took the top rookie award in the NSHL as well. Ovechkin took every vote on the final ballot, which isn't to slight Crosby or Phaneuf. LEMIEUX TROPHY (Awarded to the league's top first-year player) BRK Alexander Ovechkin 10 VAW Sidney Crosby 0 BUF Dion Phaneuf 0 We have a tie for the league's top coach this year, and both men deserve all of the credit and more. Jason McCorrister paced his North Calgary Hawks to the top of a tough Northwest Division, while Lee Yelshin's Bullies set a franchise record for points with 105. BLAKE TROPHY (Awarded to the league's top coach) NCH Jason McCorrister 3 MAN Lee Yelshin 3 BRK Jeff Tsuruoka 2 VAN Junu Kim 1 SEA Doug Norris 1 It's surprising, given his long and distinguished career, but this is Rod Brind'amour's first career Gainey Trophy. Brindy was vital to the success of the Hawks this year, with 46 takeaways and 26 hits while winning 63 percent of 1105 faceoffs. GAINEY TROPHY (Awarded to the league's top defensive forward) NCH Rod Brind'amour 4 SEA Mike Fisher 3 VAW Henrik Zetterberg 3 STM Antoine Vermette 0 A common saying about art is that it's hard to define, but that you know it when you see it. If the same holds true for defensemen, then Chris Pronger certainly looks the part, nearly sweeping the final ballot. Pronger averaged more than one hit per game (85) while almost equalling that total in takeaways (77). HARVEY TROPHY (Awarded to the league's top defensive defenseman) HOU Chris Pronger 9 PIT Scott Niedermayer 1 HOU Nicklas Lidstrom 0 Once one of the league's most feared scorers, Teemu Selanne suffered through an injury-riddled pre-lockout season with the Long Island Berserkers. But the change of scenery did wonders for the Finnish Flash, who put up 57 goals and 117 points with the Hawks. PARENT TROPHY (Awarded to the comeback player of the year) NCH Teemu Selanne 6 MAN Anson Carter 2 MAN Dominik Hasek 2 Junu Kim wins the final ballot for the Norris Trophy, and although you could make a solid argument for any of the three, I don't think you can doubt what Junu brings to the table each and every biweek. Whatever is necessary and whatever it takes, Junu steps up to assist. Negative thirty-eight incentive points this season is (I believe) unheard of. Although it's not nearly equal to what he does for the league, I'm proud that Junu will forever be associated with this award. NORRIS TROPHY (Awarded to the owner/associate who best exemplifies the spririt of the league and its members) VAW Junu Kim 7 CCC Brian Leahy 3 MAN Lee Yelshin 0 Nearing the end of an incredible NHL, ISHL and NSHL career, Joe Nieuwendyk was traded to the Seattle Rainiers on January tenth of this season. From that point forward, the Ontario native turned the club's fortunes around, culminating in the team's second Cup championship. Despite missing three postseason games, Nieuwendyk paced a star-laden team with ten goals and twenty-nine points, winning many key faceoffs while providing veteran leadership on a younger club. BELIVEAU TROPHY (Awarded to the player deemed most valuable in the Farley Cup playoffs) SEA Joe Nieuwendyk Vancouver takes both centre spots on the all-league team, with Ovechkin and Cheechoo flanking Henrik Zetterberg on the first team. Lidstrom and Phaneuf man the blueline, while Miikka Kiprusoff tends net, continuing a long history where the Sawchuk winner differs from the all-league goaltender. Dean Engemoen and Eric Goodman comprise the current council; both are non-biased regarding league matters, both know their stuff, and both can still be a valuable asset to the NSHL even though they are no longer owners. Thank you to both for agreeing to help out! ************************************************************************** OUTLAWS, ADIEU! by Eric Goodman, Houston owner emeritus Houston Outlaws spokesman Esa Tikkanen delivered his final statement on Sunday afternoon. "I'm very sad to say that the current ownership has decided to move on," said the fiesty Finn to a stunned crowd. "We've had many good years here in Houston but as of today the entire coaching staff and management team has been told to clear out their offices. NSHL leadership has plans in place to find a new owner for the team.. and we wish all of the current Outlaw players and the new ownership team the best of luck." Tikkanen was the only member of the Outlaws organization present at the press conference and he left the podium promptly after the announcement, declining to answer further questions. So... I've enjoyed competing with everyone in the NSHL over the past seven or so years but I no longer have the time or motivation to do so at what I would consider an appropriate level. While the SoM hockey game has frustrated and disappointed me many times over the past few years, the leadership and membership of the NSHL has always been top-notch. It's been an honor to participate in the league and I with both the league and all its participants the best of luck going forward. Now don't abuse my replacement too much, please ;) Thanks and Farewell, Eric Goodman formerly of the NSHL Houston Outlaws ************************************************************************** DISAPPOINTED BUT UNBOWED IN BROOKLYN by Jeff Tsuruoka, Brooklyn owner There isn't a team in existence that isn't disappointed over losing a playoff series, let alone the Finals, and the Brooklyn Fourteenth are no exception, but despite a game five loss which capped a 4 games to 1 Finals win for the Seattle Rainiers there wasn't much evidence of players hanging their heads. "The better team won," said defenceman Mike Commodore. "That's about all there is to say about it. We went out there, we played our asses off, and it wasn't enough. All credit to Seattle - they got it done." Brooklyn netminder Olaf Kolzig was equally philosophical; "I'm proud of us, proud of the guys. We couldn't have played any harder - smarter in some places maybe, but I can look around this locker room and know that each guy in here left it all out there on the ice. I mean, look at JR over there, coming back to play on one leg for us - and it's the same up and down the lineup." Defenceman Kyle McLaren added a touch of levity to the moment. Leaning into the reporter's microphone with a wry smile he said, "If there were a game two nights from now you wouldn't be talking to Olie right now. He'd be too busy kicking our asses in here." In reaching the Finals for the first time in nine seasons the Fourteenth realized several positives in 2006-07, the most obvious being the arrival of Alexander Ovechkin, a strong candidate for the league MVP award in his first year in the NSHL, the resurgence of Olaf Kolzig, and the blossoming of several young players into steady contributors. The team goes into the offseason with many question marks though, and will likely be an active participant in the summer's trade frenzy. A large crowd of fans was at LaGuardia Airport to meet the team when they arrived home after the game, and even a loss in the Finals couldn't dampen their enthusiasm. "Brooklyn is back," said McLaren as he shook hands and signed autographs in the wee hours of the morning. ************************************************************************** VIEW FROM THE CLIFF by Chris Malitsky, Sound Harbor owner The Stone Harbor Sound this week pulled off two post-season blockbuster deals. The team, in need of front-line scoring, was in one enviable position. They had two franchise goalies in Ryan Miller and Henrik Lundqvist. The team was not looking to deal either of them. Lyndonville came to the Sound looking for their franchise goalie in Miller. This name was a tough one for Sound GM, Chris Malitsky, to talk about, for it was Miller whom the GM acquired to become the Sound's frachise netminder after the Marc Denis experiment failed. The various packages the Blades offered the Sound were very fair and attractive. Malitsky finally agreed to one as it offered the team some more depth at the forward position. The Sound moved Miller, along with Jamie Langenbrunner and the team's 3rd round pick to the Blades for center David Legwand, highly regarded forward Marek Svatos, goalie Manny Fernandez, defensive stalwart Jay McKee, promising defenseman Trevor Daley, and the Capital City Cougars' 1st round pick. This deal gave each team a bit of what it needed: the Blades received their franchise goalie and the Sound received some depth from which they could pursue some forward scoring help. After completing the deal with the Blades, the Sound GM felt he was in a position to acquire a young scorer. A deal was struck between the Sound and the Minneapolis Massasauga. The Sound sent the 'Mass Stone Harbor's 1st round pick, the recently acquired Cougars' 1st, Svatos and Daley for Thomas Vanek. This latter deal give both teams what they need as well: the Sound netted their sniper and the 'Mass got four young building blocks. The keys to this deal for the 'Mass are Svatos and the 6th overall selection, while Daley and the Cougar 1st offer nice depth protection. The 'Mass critically needed young, talented depth and the received an awful lot in this package. The Sound are considering moving Manny Fernandez to a team needing a netminder. Fernandez has a very respectable 0.911 save percentage in 44 games this past season. ************************************************************************** DEPARTMENT OF MINUTIA DEPARTMENT: Something I've noticed as someone who makes a habit of studying both goaltenders and the Seattle Rainiers: 1997: Ron Hextall and the Philadelphia Flyers advance to the Cup Finals 1998: Ron Hextall and the Seattle Pirates advance to the Cup Finals 2003: J-S Giguere and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim advance to the Cup Finals 2004: J-S Giguere and the Seattle Rainiers advance to the Cup Finals 2006: Dwayne Roloson and the Edmonton Oilers advance to the Cup Finals 2007: Dwayne Roloson and the Seattle Rainiers advance to the Cup Finals I'm not suggesting anything, although I wouldn't recommend trading Ray Emery or J-S Giguere to me at any point in the next year. Or Peter Budaj the year after that. :-) ************************************************************************** 2007 FARLEY CUP FINALS RESULTS: #2E BROOKLYN FOURTEENTH at #3W SEATTLE RAINIERS: Brooklyn 1, at Seattle Rainiers 6 [Game One, Seattle leads series, 1-0] SEA Dwayne Roloson -
