In my absence, the league is in the capable hands of Brian Leahy. I plan to have all of my home games played before I leave, so please get your computer managers out to me as soon as humanly possible. Enjoy your week! Thank you to Doug North for his great article, and to Brian, Tom and Guy for their exceptional efforts this biweek and all others. As you might imagine, this league takes a lot of work to keep it running smoothly, and it's an all-star lineup behind the scenes here at the NSHL. ********************************************************************* SOME DRAFT QUESTIONS The draft was the subject of a few e-mails just prior to the release, so I thought I would answer those questions here by reprising the amendment which was passed. I believe that it answers all stated questions; please speak up if I missed something. The NSHL player entry process will consist of parallel drafts of the following type: (a) An entry draft of an indefinite length (until the pool is exhausted). (b) A waiver draft of four rounds in length. Eligible players for the entry draft include players who have never been previously drafted by an NSHL franchise and who have never played an NSHL game (regular-season or postseason). All other players will enter the league through the waiver draft. One month prior to the NSHL entry draft, all teams must have a roster size no larger than twenty-six players (skaters plus goaltenders). The entry draft will occur on the second Saturday in September, live via the NSHL chat room. Teams may draft in as many rounds as they would like until the pool of eligible first-year players is exhausted. The waiver draft will occur on the third Saturday in September, via draft lists. These lists will be submitted by individual owners between the end of the entry draft and the day before the waiver draft. Any owner not submitting a list is considered to have submitted a "no selections" list. The waiver draft order will be determined on the basis of the previous regular-season standings, with lesser teams drafting before stronger teams. (No draft lottery will be used to modify the first round of the waiver draft). The previous season's Farley Cup winner would draft last in each round. Waiver draft choices may not be traded. Immediately following the release of the waiver draft results, teams may claim players from the free agent list. The free agent list is comprised of players who were not selected in their respective drafts as well as any players released between the drafts and Opening Day. Teams must have a roster size no larger than thirty-six players (skaters plus goaltenders) as of Opening Day. ********************************************************************* WEEK THIRTEEN/FOURTEEN IN REVIEW: It was a tale of three games in Lincoln on January 16 when the Long Island Berserkers battled the Capital City Cougars. Long Island came out very strong over the first 43:09 of the contest, where the Berserkers built a 4-0 lead on the strength of two Vincent Lecavalier goals. The last twelve minutes featuring an improbable comeback by the home team, as the Cougars tied the game with just 1:10 remaining. And then came the shootout, where Long Island's Evgeni Nabokov and Capital City's Manny Legace battled for thirteen shooters apiece before Ryan Whitney sent the crowd home disappointed. Long shootouts were in vogue this biweek; in addition to the Berserkers and Cougars, the Sasquatch and Aeros went nine shooters apiece and Brooklyn and Stone Harbor went seven. Nine points separate the top and bottom in the Northwest Division! And while they're all fighting it out, the Houston Aeros have surged to within one point of the overall conference lead. First-year coach Mike Kuduk has finally gotten his roster clicking, and have accumulated 30 of a possible 32 points over the past four weeks. ********************************************************************* PARI-SAY WHAT? by Doug North, Topeka owner You are Zach Parise of the Topeka Tarantulas. After scoring 18 goals in your rookie season, you avoid the sophomore slump with 32 goals and 32 assists after only 58 games. You are the lone All Star candidate on a team that has won only 14 games all season. What is next in line for you.......your first all star appearence??? A new long term deal??? How 'bout a trade? WHAT??? In the old "ya gotta trade something to get something" deal, Parise was dealt to the North Calgary Hounds along with Jordin Tootoo for center Henrik Sedin and a second round pick. The trade fills a HUGE hole in the middle for the Tarantulas for this year and, more importantly the next few years. "We had to do something," said GM Doug North. "Right now out of the centers we have on our roster this year, I can only see one (Matthew Lombardi) playing a major role for us next year. Two guys (Svitov and Immonen) are homesick and wanna go home and Eric (Lindros) is having injury problems again and we're not sure he'll be back." With this huge void luming, something had to be done. Enter Mr. Sedin. "Henrik is the perfect center for this growing team. He's responsible defensively and his passing is world class. We feel we have the wingers coming as Corey Perry, Alex Radulov, Alex Hemsky, Andrei Kostitsyn, Chuck Kobasew are progressing well. We'll be in even better shape if Gilbert Brule, Dustin Boyd, Rene Bourque, Nigel Dawes, Rusty Olesz and Robert Nilsson can become the players we think they can be. We expect to get another high impact player in the draft next year so we can see things starting to come together." The work is not finished however as the team needs help in goal and on the blueline. "It's important that we build depth up front. Even if they don't play for us, we can trade those assets to help us in other areas." Just ask Zach Parise. "I am surprised but not totally shocked," said Parise just before leaving the locker room for Forbes Airport in Topeka. "I am not sure what role I'll have in North Calgary but it will be exciting to be in the playoff hunt instead of worrying about freaking ping pong balls in the lottery." SPIDER BITES: Topeka tried to fill some holes on the blueline with two seperate deals. First, goaltender Manny Fernandez was traded to Quebec City along with a 6th round pick for young blueliners Anton Babchuk and Kyle Cumiskey. Captain Eric Lindros was also traded to Capital City for Ossi Vaananen. Lindros is hoping to return for the playoffs so TPK made it a point to trade him to a contender. Wade Redden was given the "C" and newcomer Henrik Sedin an "A". Both Vaananen and Babchuk are rumored to be playing overseas next season. "Even if that is the case we would hope that one or both would eventually come back this way in the near future." ********************************************************************* PENALTY KILLS CONTINUE TO FAIL RAINIERS by Doug Norris, Seattle Rainiers owner As the Rainiers struggle to stay near the top of the Western Conference, once again their shorthanded play continues to fail them. Thus far on the 2007-08 campaign, Seattle has allowed 48 goals on 208 chances, a kill rate of 76.9%. With their top defensive forward (Mike Fisher) and top defensive defenseman (Ed Jovanovski) out all of Week 13/14 due to aches and pains, the deficit really showed as the club struggled to go 4-4. "We need something, a spark," said Doug Norris in his weekly press conference. "I don't know if we're going to get it from within, or if we need to make a move, but I can assure you that we're going to get it." It's not as though the club has ever been particularly strong while down a man, as the 2006-07 Farley Cup champions were below league average at 76.5%. But it's no secret that the club is looking for another strong penalty killer, whether it's a forward or a defenseman. And with a bevy of prospects as well as two first-round draft choices, Norris feels that he can get his man. ********************************************************************* WEEK THIRTEEN/FOURTEEN RESULTS: Manayunk 1, at Brooklyn 3 BRK Olaf Kolzig -
