Thanks Scott! Chris Beddick continues to provide outstanding service to the league with his Central Scouting reports. This one may be the most in depth to date. Great work Chris! A new overusage policy mentioned below. Thankfully we did not have too much trouble this year. In fact overall things went very smoothly. Except for a couple of hiccups deadlines were met and I would like to thank all of you guys for making this job easier than I expected it to be. The next couple of paragraphs (like everything I do) are heavily plagiarized from Doug Norris in newsletters past. Thank you to Brian for not only keeping the regular season league files, but for preparing the Farley Cup playoff league file (which will be out shortly). After the file is out, road teams should get their computer manager to the home team as soon as possible, and all series need to be complete by May 5th. Netplay of games is strongly encouraged if at all possible. NOTE: Computer-only players can NOT play in the Farley Cup playoffs. Aside from that, players are limited to their actual NHL games played in the playoffs. I will roll an injury chance after each postseason game. Take note of the injuries present at the start of the quarterfinal series, listed at the bottom of the newsletter. NOTE: Please re-read the preceding note. All non-goaltender usage rules are identical in the Farley Cup playoffs, with the following additions: During playoff overtimes, the fourth line must be scheduled to play one shift before the overtime period is 3/4th complete. You must also play/rotate your three/four defensive lines equally, barring penalties. Remember the goaltender rules (reprised below). Also, please check below for starting playoff injuries. Remember that a new injury is "rolled" after each game, and Doug or I will update each series' participants with new injuries after each game. ********************************************************************* POSTSEASON GOALTENDER USAGE: 1- There are no limits on Goalies rated 5+. 2- A goalie rated 1 or 2 cannot start a game. 3- A goalie rated 3 or 4 can start a playoff game under two conditions: a) He starts the first game of the playoffs and he plays until he reaches special fatigue rating (SFR: See Point 3) b) He starts the game AFTER another goalie of his team reaches his own fatigue rating (or SFR if less than 5) and can play until he becomes fatigued again. 4- The special fatigue rating (SFR) is faced when a goalie rated less than 5 allows 4 goals or more in a game (instead of the 6 of the regular fatigue rating). A goalie reaching his SFR can finish his game, but has to sit until the conditions in Point 3b are fulfilled. *************************************************************************** DRAFT LOTTERY We changed our constitution last year to make sure out draft order and lottery system mirrors the NHL. This will give all non-playoff teams a chance to win the first overall pick and will seed playoff teams based on their post season success rather than regular season points. NHL lottery rules can be found here NHL Lottery It will require a bit of statistical tweaking as there are six fewer non-playoff teams in the NSHL than there are in the real life counterpart. Thankfully we have a Doug that can figure out stuff like this with his super-brain and he has graciously agreed to run the lottery. Doug will announce the date and results when he has time to take care of it. Corner Creek and Pittsburgh each had 72 points, but as Pittsburgh had more wins the tie was broken in Corner Creek’s favor. Our participants this year in order from best chance to least likely to win the top pick go as follows: Seattle Sasquatch Capital City Cougars Nevada Thunder New Jersey Manayunk Bullies Corner Creek Pittsburgh Hornets Buffalo Bulldogs *************************************************************************** 2013 NSHL Draft Central Scouting Top 25 (Final Edition) by Chris Beddick Today's edition is the final list we will be doing this year, cutting back from the usual 3 due to the shortened NHL season. The consensus from Central Scouting is, the abbreviated NHL season so far has not diluted the talent pool for our upcoming NSHL Draft. There is an exciting group of youngsters that will be selected on draft day. Our disclaimers are as usual: 1) This is just for fun, and doesn't mean a whole lot, LOL. 2) If you are wondering where this guy or that guy is, he probably has been drafted already in our league. 3) Please let me know if a player I have listed is already on a roster, that would be just an innocent oversight on my part. In addition, Central Scouting is striving to project the overall value of these players 3 to 5 years down the road, not just their current value (card, rating, etc) in this coming set. ***Please see our Major Disclaimer at the end of this list below*** So with that, here we go. 1) f Nail Yakupov, EDM - An electrifying talent, the Russian-born winger possesses the game-breaking ability that makes him a threat to score every time he is on the ice. Armed with a devastating release, Yakupov is as lethal as they come as an offensive player. Has phenomenal sniping ability, great puck skills and the speed to be a constant scoring threat from the wing position. In addition to great hands, Yakupov may be the best skater in the draft. The main negative for Yakupov is that he's more of a pure finisher than an overall offensive talent; he needs to work on involving his teammates more and setting up plays. Then again, Brett Hull never exactly set up Adam Oates, nor had to, lol. The CHL Rookie of the Year in 2011, he took very little time to assert his dominance during his two-year junior career with the Sarnia Sting. It was there that he proved fully capable of thriving in the North American style of play. 2) f Jonathan Huberdeau, FLA - Can be electrifying with his creativity, shifty moves, and quick skating speed. The game-breaking forward possesses great hands and playmaking skills, which are complemented by his high hockey IQ and offensive vision. Simply oozes offense from his pours, whether playing center or wing. Has tremendous hand/eye coordination and plenty of offensive creativity. Needs to work on his overall game without the puck. Must also get stronger in order to better compete with professional defensemen, as he still has a slightly lanky frame, which he will need to add more bulk and strength to maximize his potential. But all of the tools are in the tool box to be a complete, dominant force for years to come. 3) f Vladimir Tarasenko, STL - A fiery competitor, he plays with grit and tenacity. Has tremendous puck-handling and one-on-one skills. Is strong on his skates, so he is good at puck protection and also battling along the boards. Oozes scoring upside. Considered the top Russian-born talent in the 2010 NHL entry draft, Tarasenko slipped into the mid-first round due to concerns about his contract status in the KHL with Sibir Novosibirsk, the team coached by his father. Otherwise, he would have been a top 5 pick no doubt. Strongest asset is his goal scoring ability with his quick hands and sudden release. His explosive acceleration allows him to create space, where he can score or use his strong playmaking ability. He is solidly built at 5'11 202 pounds, and has been playing against men in the KHL since the age of 16, making him one of the more pro ready prospects of the 2010 class. Still needs to hone his two-way game and add even more muscle to excel for a long stretch in the NHL. 4) d Dougie Hamilton, BOS - The complete package and not surprisingly the top rated defenseman in our draft. Has a big, lanky frame, a good point shot and all-around upside from the back end. Is capable of putting up excellent numbers from the back end. Can quarterback a power play. He simply dominated the OHL with Niagara to the tune of 72 points in only 50 games last season, while also performing at the top of his game for Team Canada at the 2012 U20 World Junior Championships. Hamilton is an athletic, mobile, and all-weather workhorse capable of playing in all situations. As his junior numbers attest, he is comfortable jumping up into the play and making an impact when the puck is on his stick. Needs to fill out his 6-5 frame and round out his all-round game, and in particular learn how to use his size more to his advantage. Must prove he can be a dominant player against men. Central Scouting believes he will, and very soon. 5) f Alex Galchenyuk, MTL - Has outstanding vision and creativity, and is adept at both playmaking and also scoring goals himself. Also owns projectable size and two-way upside. Is a big playmaking center who has the high-end offensive talents to produce on his team's top line. The talented center has excellent offensive skills, vision, and hockey sense along with an ability to make the difficult plays look easy. He has character and work ethic as well as a strong commitment to be the best. The 18-year-old will need to improve his acceleration, strength, physicality, and defensive zone positioning to be successful at the NHL level. Has already suffered a serious knee injury early on in his career, so he must prove his durability over time. Central Scouting believes, however, this should not scare any team from taking him. There is just too much upside to ignore. 6) f Jakob Silfverberg, OTT - Has excellent offensive ability, coupled with a projectable 6-1 frame and some power forward upside. Can line up on either side of center. Displays sound defensive ability, too. The 22-year-old had a phenomenal season with Brynas in the Swedish Elite League in 2011-12 scoring 24 goals and totaling 54 points in 49 games. At the conclusion of the season, he was named the league's Most Valuable Player and then joined the Ottawa Senators for two playoff games. He plays with maturity and is fully capable of playing a smart two-way game but has the speed, shot, and overall hockey sense required to play on a scoring line in the NHL. 7) d Justin Schultz, EDM - Is a high octane defenseman, a true offensive star from the back end. He spent a great deal of time on the power play during his college tenure and displays a good shot and vision. He is an adept skater and has no problem carrying the puck end-to-end. Can often act as a fourth forward on the ice, thanks to supreme offensive instincts and excellent mobility from the back end. A natural with the puck on his blade, he produces plenty of offense. Must get physically stronger and fill out his frame in order to better handle big NHL forwards at the highest level. Also, he needs to continue to work on his play without the puck (in all zones). He will never be much of a physical force at the NHL level. 8) f Brendan Gallagher, MTL - Owns great speed and tenacity on the forecheck. Can score goals, set up linemates and play a solid two-way game. Always leads by example when on the ice. The small physical winger doesn't need a lot of time or space to strike offensively and will take advantage of the smallest of chances. He has improved his skating speed and added more muscle mass, the undersized forward will still need to increase both in order to play his style of game in the dirty areas around the net at the NHL level. 9) d Jonas Brodin, MIN - Has supreme puck-moving ability, plus a projectable frame and offensive upside. Can log plenty of minutes for his hockey club, which adds to his overall value. Is a very mobile defender, but not overly physical. Is not an elite package, but he is developing quickly. Needs to add more bulk and get physically stronger to best handle National Hockey League forwards. May be a bit too passive in his demeanor, overall. Top 4 potential in an era when puck moving d men are coveted. 10) f Cory Conacher, OTT - Has tremendous offensive instincts, playmaking acumen and a lot of quickness. He's also deceptive on the ice, and rather elusive. Is also willing to work the corners to make plays and is quite feisty. His general lack of size (5-8, 190 pounds) will always be a factor as long as he's toiling in the highest professional hockey ranks, especially since he doesn't back down from anyone. Was never drafted, but the fact that he has since made it this far is a great compliment to the kid's tenacity and work ethic. And could keep him in the NHL for the next 10 years. Was traded at the deadline to Ottawa, so will get maximum opportunites to excel with the Sens. 11) d Jake Muzzin, LAK - Has no glaring weaknesses to his game. The 6’4 defenseman is offensively sound with an accurate one-time shot and a quick release. His passing is also above average as he makes a crisp breakout pass and can jump into the offense if needed. Greatest asset to his game is a nasty on-ice demeanor. Demonstrates poise and willingness to take on more than one player at a time - regardless of how much bigger they may be, and is willing to drop the gloves. He is also good at taking players out of the play and clearing the front of the net. 12) f Mikael Granlund, MIN - Is a smart playmaker with excellent vision and the versatility to play all three forward positions. Works hard, can skate and shoot. Great hockey sense, he can score highlight-reel goals. Is undersized, so he must prove capable of withstanding the constant pounding in North America in the long run. Needs to continue adding speed and strength to his arsenal. Long considered one of hockey’s top prospects, Granlund will add dynamic and creative offense to the Minnesota lineup. And the timing may be right, as he may be playing alot with Zach Parise, which will help his point total. 13) f Emerson Etem, ANA - Has great speed, which he uses effectively to get to the outside of defenders. Is a very good goal-scorer, too. Can really dominate from his off-wing (right). Courted a goal-per-game in his final junior season, proving to be one of the most explosive players in all the CHL. Etem has also proven an effective penalty killer that poses a constant threat to generate a shorthanded goal. Needs to get stronger physically and add bulk to his 6-0 frame in order to maximize his scoring potential at the highest level. Also needs more work without the puck. 14) f Beau Bennett, PIT - Has very good instincts with the puck and plenty of playmaking ability from the wing. Can play on either wing and also has a good shot. Since he was drafted in 2010, Bennett has added 40 pounds and an inch in height, putting him well into the average realm of height and weight for NHL forwards. He has also dramatically improved his skating over the past two seasons and now possesses a relatively explosive first step. It is anticipated that he will be Crosby's LW starting in 2013-14, so his future value could skyrocket. 15) f Charlie Coyle, MIN - Has outstanding offensive instincts and excellent hands. Can both set up teammates and finish off plays himself. Also displays the size required to fend off defenders effectively at the highest level. While he can play both wing and center, his defensive game may not be quite good enough to play down the middle in the National Hockey League. Could also stand to use his size more. He’s a powerful skater, and he can protect the puck real well along the boards. 16) f JT Miller, NYR - Has a wealth of speed and offensive acumen, the versatility to play center or wing, as well as the size and grit to play a power forward's game. Miller is an excellent two-way player, with some offensive upside. A good face-off man, he plays well along the boards and in tight areas. Needs to get bigger and physically stronger in order to excel at playing his in-your-face style at the highest level. Also needs to work on his playmaking. 17) f Mikhail Grigorenko, BUF - Offensively, he displays great patience with the puck and the ability to find open ice or feed a pass to an open man. Although he has been criticized in the past for his consistency and intensity, he played through a handful of injuries during the year and his talent level is undeniable. A smooth skater with great hands, he made strides during the season to play a more all-around game. Has outstanding offensive instincts and an imposing 6-3 frame for the center position. Is still adjusting to the North American game. Needs to work on his game-to-game consistency in order to maximize his massive potential as a NHL scorer. Also needs to gain more maturity, overall. 18) f Nick Bjugstad, FLA - Has a great frame (6-4) for the center position, as well as hockey sense, plenty of goal-scoring instincts and a quick trigger. Also displays great work ethic and leadership qualities. He uses his size to create traffic at the front of the net or win puck battles along the boards and he pesters opposing players with his relentless forecheck. He uses his body well, both for physical play, puck protection, and positional play on defense. He projects as the kind of big, strong, first-line center that can dictate the pace of the game, or at worst become a talented second-line center with an active two-way game. 19) f Alex Chiasson, DAL - Has a massive frame and displays plenty of physicality in his game. Owns both scoring and power-forward potential. Has a good blend of size and skill. Decent speed on his feet, but needs to work on skating, especially stride. Obviously needs to fill out his 6’3 frame. Can stickhandle through traffic. Goes to the net, but will have to learn to get a bit grittier in close. Needs to be a little more patient in his own end. There are some concerns about his effort level. Is a very good playmaker from the winger position. Potential top-six playmaking winger. 20) g Jake Allen, STL - Has an excellent frame, so he has the ability to cover a lot of net. He's 'quiet' in terms of his movement and technically sound. He displays excellent lateral movement and strong positional play. Allen is always on his toes and moves quickly between the pipes. He’s great at moving the puck, feeding the puck to open defenders to quickly spur on the attack. He’s also strong at controlling the puck when he makes a save, limiting rebounds and keeping square to the shooter. Needs to improve his glove hand and become a better pressure goalkeeper in order to maximize his starting goaltender potential. 21) f Filip Forsberg, NSH - Has a very projectable 6-2 frame, plenty of offensive acumen, a good release and quick shot. Also displays plenty of two-way upside, sound defensive instincts and the ability to line up on either side of center. Needs to fill out, add a lot of strength to his upper body and prove capable of withstanding the rigors of the NHL schedule in order to maximize his scoring output at the highest level. Was traded by Washington at the deadline and should find a long term home in Nashville. Is just 18 years old. 22) f Damien Brunner, DET - Has a proven track record for scoring at lower levels, particularly in Europe. His offensive instincts are excellent, and he also boasts a good shot. Is undersized, a bit weak on the puck and somewhat passive in his overall approach. Therefore, he needs to make adjustments to North America. He is also 27, so not exactly a kid 23) f Chris Kreider, NYR - The 21-year-old burst onto the scene during the Rangers' playoff run, where in 18 playoff games, the former Boston College standout scored five goals, and two assists. Possessing an impressive combination of size and speed, the attributes to play both a power and a skill game. His straight-line speed for someone his size makes him scary for opposing defenders, and his hard, quick release keeps goaltenders on their toes. Can also play the center position, if need be. His fast start may have set unrealistic expectations for this season. But Central Scouting remains bullish that his long term future is very bright. 24) f Alex Killorn, TB - Has good size, versatility and strong two-way instincts. Can also put points on the board, which adds to his overall value. Can be used in all game situations. He has respectable speed and coordination complimented by a strong work ethic. Is developing his awareness and anticipation skills on the defensive side of the game to match his offensive instincts. Plays with a gritty, nasty side to his game and should be even more effective in this game as he adds size and strength. Will he score enough at the NHL level to maximize his all-round potential? The jury is still out. Also needs to improve as a passer. 25) d Jamie Oleksiak, DAL - Has tremendous size (6-7, 242 pounds) and reach for the blueline position, so he's not easy to play against. Also skates well for his size and has good offensive instincts. Possesses a really nice blend of physicality and outstanding puck skills. While much has been said of his size and physical side, what is most impressive about him is his superb agility and athleticism. He moves remarkably well for such a big man, skating with long, fluid strides. He also maintains very good balance on his skates as well. The potential is there to be a top pairing D man. ***MAJOR DISCLAIMER*** One of the big questions that will be asked to Central Scouting is, "What about Anaheim goalie Viktor Fasth, isn't he worthy of a first round pick?" Central Scouting's answer is, "yes". He has had a great "rookie" season on a good team. But there is just too much long term talent on the board this season, and Central Scouting does not get terribly excited about 30 year old rookies. So buyer beware. *************************************************************************** CALENDAR OF EVENTS: April 22 - Post season begins April 24 - Game one CMs due.
