EASTERN CONFERENCE #1 St. Michael’s Privateers (125 pts.) vs. #8 Indianapolis Chiefs (87 pts.) - STM, 4-1 St. Mike’s was keyed by Brad Richards’ 4 goals and Jordan Staal’s 5 goals. Tim Thomas was strong in net with a 0.953 save percentage. The Privateers clamped down on defense, only allowing 7 goals total for Indianapolis in five games, and no goals at all in the third period of any game. #2 Long Island Beserkers (109 pts.) vs. #7 Florida Hellcats (89 pts.) - FLO, 4-1 The opening week’s biggest upset, considering the 20 point regular season difference between the teams. Long Island won the first game then dropped the next four, allowing 16 goals against for the series. The upset was spurred by Tyler Ennis’ 5 goals and Blake Wheeler’s 3 goals and 4 assists for Florida. Neither goalie was super sharp (Theodore 0.904, Halak 0.918). The referees played a big role, as Florida was shorthanded only 9 times in the entire series, and took advantage of 17 power play attempts, converting 29% of them. #3 Stone Harbor Sound (111 pts.) vs. #6 Quebec City Patriotes (89 pts.) - SHS, 4-1 The teams split two games before Stone Harbor ran off 3 straight wins, paced by Evander Kane’s 4 goals and Ray Whitney’s 8 assists. Rich Peverly had 4 goals and Max Pacioretty had 3 goals to pace the Patriotes. James Reimer, in his first playoff series, showed he has a lot to learn, allowing 11 goals in 2 games. #4 Lyndonville Blades (106 pts.) vs. #5 Brooklyn Fourteenth (99 pts.) - BRK, 4-2 The teams split the first four games, with Brooklyn gutting out a 2-1 win on the road in game 5 then taking care of business in game 6. Brian Boyle’s 3 goals and David Krejci’s 4 assists paced the Fourteenth, while Jason Pominville’s 5 goals and Michael Grabovski’s 3 goals led the Blades. Both goalies were very sharp, with Carey Price besting Cory Schneider. Brooklyn scored only one more goal than Lyndonville over the course of the series, but won two more games. WESTERN CONFERENCE #1 Vancouver Whitecaps (116 pts.) vs. #8 Seattle Rainiers (75 pts.) - VAW, 4-0 Vancouver outscored Seattle 20-6 en route to the sweep, killing all 20 penalties it took. Geoffrey Lupul had 3 goals to lead Vancouver. Mike Smith ended up with a 0.942 save pct., Cam Ward ended up at 0.797. #2 Gulf Shores Stingrays (112 pts.) vs. #7 Red River Rebellion (91 pts.) - GSS, 4-0 Another sweep with an 18-9 goal differential. David Clarkson had 5 goals in 4 games for the Rays, with Tomas Fleischmann (6 assists), Niklas Backstrom (5 assists) and Jordan Staal (5 assists) providing the bulk of the Gulf Shores offense. Special teams were big, as Gulf Shores converted 8 of 14 power play attempts for a 57% efficiency. #3 Missouri River Otters (108 pts.) vs. #6 North Calgary Hawks (100 pts.) - MRO, 4-2 A lot closer than the previous two series, the Otters won a 3-2 decision in game 5 after the teams split the opening 4 contests. There was only one more goal scored by Missouri than by North Calgary in aggregate, and both power plays were rolling at over 30%. The difference may have come down to goaltending, where Pekka Rinne (0.908 save pct.) was slightly better than Mikka Kiprusoff (0.893 save pct.). Andrei Kostitsyn and Radim Vrbata has 3 goals each for the Otters, while the Hawks were paced by Ryan Callahan’s 4 goals and Steven Stamkos’ and Phil Kessel’s 3 goals. #4 Freson Vultures (107 pts.) vs. #5 Houston Aeros (103 pts.) - HOU, 4-3 Last but not least. The home team won each of the first 2 games in this series, then the road team won each of the last three. Game 7 was decided in triple overtime when Eric Karlsson put home a rebound off of a Alex Ponikarovsky shot 6 minutes into period number 6. Houston had to kill off 4 penalties in overtime of game 7, Fresno one. Houston’s penalty kill was a huge factor in the series, killing off 25 of 29 attempts, by far the highest number of penalties called against any team in the first round. Tomas Vokoun was special with a save pct. of 0.944. Jimmy Howard was pretty good too, with a save pct. of 0.920. Good luck to the survivors! *************************************************************************** CALENDAR OF EVENTS: May - Game one CMs due. May - 11:59 PM ET - All game reports are due.
