Gulf Shores was one of two teams that during this biweek recorded this season's first 8-0 segments. In running the table, the Stingrays outscored opponents 36-11 - and surrendered zero points to opponents (ie, all games were decided in regulation). And they did this while taking on some formidable opponents: a pair of 3-2 wins over North Calgary (once at home and once in Alberta), a 4-1 victory over Lyndonville, and a decisive 5-0 thumping over Vancouver on Whitecap home ice. "The Stingrays were miles ahead of us in this contest. Frankly, we were lucky to get zero," Whitecap coach Junu Kim said about his team's performance in this game. This run puts the Stingrays two points ahead of Houston in the Central. Also going 8-0 was Stone Harbor, whose victims included Long Island (a 4-3 win) and North Calgary (a 4-2 win). The Sound scored 36 goals and gave up only 12 and now sit three points behind St. Michael's in the Atlantic. The Privateers did well themselves by claiming 14 of 16 points this biweek, including victories over Lyndonville and Vancouver. In the Northeast, Long Island holds a 1-point lead over Lyndonville after going 6-2 in the biweek. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps finished 6-2 to maintain its lead in the Northwest, even though a goaltending controversy appears to be emerging. Even though he's tied for the league lead in victories with 16, starter Devan Dubnyk muddled through the biweek with a 4-2 record and a .903 save percentage. Among the losses was a 2-1 defeat at St. Michael's in a rematch of last year's finals, as Corey Crawford outgoaltended Dubnyk and Dion Phaneuf scored twice. Meanwhile, Mike Smith, last season's playoffs MVP, is 3-0 this season with a 1.00 GAA and a .965 save percentage in part-time work. In case you missed it, here are some interesting highlights from the last biweek: ** This biweek's entry in the What Goes Around Comes Around Department: On Nov. 26, Pittsburgh stunned Ottawa by scoring four goals in the last 5:56, including two by rookie Vladimir Tarasenko, to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 6-5 win (despite Ottawa's Jimmy Howard stopping 11 of 13 Goalie Ratings). But on Nov. 28, the tables were turned on the Hornets, as Long Island scored three goals in the last 4:46 to beat Pittsburgh 6-5. ** This week's My Kingdom For a Goalie game took place on Nov. 26, when Capital City beat Brooklyn 4-2. Anders Lindback (CCC) and Carey Price combined to stop a grand total of one Goalie Rating on five tries. Price stopped one of three opportunities, while Lindback whiffed on both of his chances. ** Long Island played a part in two fun statistical oddities of the biweek. Berzerker goalie Sergei Bobrovsky faced 30 Boston shots on Nov. 22 - but zero Goalie Ratings in a 7-1 win. Meanwhile, in Long Island's 4-2 win over Quebec City on Nov. 24, each team had nine shots in the first period, 11 in the second and 10 in the third. ** Love shootouts? Hope you saw the Fresno at Capital City game on Nov. 23, which featured a 13-round shootout before Capital City's Brendan Dubinsky finally iced the game, 4-3. ** Eight teams had power-play percentages of at least 30% this biweek, led by Boston, at a spiffy 50% (7 for 14). Stat lines of note in the past biweek include: -- Nick Foligno, Corner Creek: 2 goals (including the gamewinner), 2 assists, +4 rating, 2 takeaways, in a 4-2 win over Boston on Nov. 23. -- The Bryan Little-Vinny Prospal-Lee Stempniak line for Boston in a 6-2 win over Brooklyn on Nov. 24, as each player had five points and went +4 while they combined for 5 goals, and 10 assists. -- Tomas Fleischmann, Gulf Shores: 5 assists, in a 10-2 victory over Red River on Nov. 29. Interestingly in that game, Red River held a 20-5 advantage in shots after one period but trailed 2-1. Gulf Shores proceeded to hang a six-spot in the second stanza. Eight Rebellion players finished with a -4 rating in this game. -- Sidney Crosby, Vancouver: 2 goals, 3 assists, 7 shots, 1 takeaway in a 7-2 win over Pittsburgh on Nov. 23; and 3 goals, an assist and 8 shots in a 4-0 win over Indianapolis on Nov. 20. -- In a 3-2 loss to Capital City on Nov. 27, the Rainiers recorded 17 takeaways - and no hits. Finally, a couple of notes from Commissioner Junu Kim: ** "Here's an advance heads-up about biweek 0910, which is the one AFTER the one that begins now. Biweek 0910 will start around Dec. 17 and will be a three-week session because of the holidays. HOWEVER: That biweek will end on the SATURDAY after New Year's Day - Jan. 4 - so that I hopefully can get all info out no later than Monday AM, Jan. 6. In other words: DO NOT PLAN on Sunday, Jan. 5, being a day to take care of your NSHL stuff. If a team reports games on Jan. 5, those games will be considered late and the team will be subject to IPs." ** "The NSHL still doesn't have any associate coaches. If you know anyone who would be a good backup, please send them my way ... or ask them if they're OK with me contacting them." ** "I haven't heard anything about preferences for how you like your newsletter formatted and delivered. So ... I'll presume a .txt file is fine with everyone." ******************************************************************** 2. Player of the Week / Goalie of the Week Player of the Week: Matt Duchene, Stone Harbor The young center showed wisdom beyond his age by leading Stone Harbor to an 8-0 biweek. Duchene had seven goals and four assists for 11 points and earned four first-star honors. He also won a whopping 78 percent of his faceoffs this biweek (57 of 78). For the season, Duchene has 19 goals - good enough to lead the league. Also under consideration: Sidney Crosby, Vancouver; Thomas Vanek, Lyndonville; and Jannik Hansen, Stone Harbor. Previous Players of the Week in 2013-14: Week 0102: Eric Staal, Gulf Shores Week 0304: Sidney Crosby, Vancouver Goalies of the Week: Brian Elliott, Gulf Shores This week's GOTW race was a close one between Elliott and Ben Bishop of Stone Harbor. Bishop went 4-0 with three shutouts, a 0.75 goals against average, and a .964 save percentage. But the nod goes to Elliott, who also went 4-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average, a shutout and a save percentage of .959. The big difference: Bishop did his work while facing 29 Goalie Ratings and stopping 26 of them (89.7 percent), while Bishop faced 12 Goalie Ratings and stopped 11 of them. Also under consideration: Jonathan Quick, Gulf Shores; Corey Crawford, St. Michael's; and Tomas Vokoun, Houston. Previous Goalies of the Week in 2013-14: Week 0102: Sergei Bobrovsky, Long Island Week 0304: Craig Anderson, Stone Harbor ******************************************************************** 3. Reminder/clarification about player usage Folks: I want to remind you about player usage this season - and clarify something that appears in this season's usage table at http://tinyurl.com/NSHL-USAGE-TABLE Just like in past NSHL years, everyone is allowed to play up to (but NOT MORE THAN) 110% of their games played. But because of the NHL lockout, we've had to adjust - or pro-rate - everyone's real-life games played. The table mentioned above shows three columns: ** "'12-13 real-life NHL games played": This is self explanatory. ** "'13-14 NSHL adjusted games played": This is the pro-rated number of real-life games, if the season was 82 games instead of 48. It's calculated by multiplying "'12-13 real-life NHL games played" by 82/48, or 1.708. Injuries are based on this number. ** "'13-14 NSHL adjusted games allowed (w/bonus)": This is the maximum number of games the player can play in the current NSHL season -- and is calculated as no more than 110% of the pro-rated number of games (which is what the NSHL's player-usage rule states). The phrase "w/bonus" essentially stands for that extra 10% of games beyond 100% of a player's "'13-14 NSHL adjusted games played" that he can play. Using Sidney Crosby as an example: ** "'12-13 real-life NHL games played": He played in 36 NHL games last year. ** "'13-14 NSHL adjusted games played": This equals 36 * 1.708, or 62. His injuries are calculated according to this number. ** "'13-14 NSHL adjusted games allowed (w/bonus)": For Crosby, this equals 62 * 1.10 and is rounded down to the nearest whole number (it's NEVER rounded up), or 68. This is the maximum number of games the player can play in the current NSHL season. Of course, if he gets injured, he may end up playing fewer than 68 games. One other important ramification: As stated in a previous newsletter ... for this season only, the minimum number of *real-life* games a player must have available to play, in order to be claimed as a free agent during the season, is four - NOT six. Questions? Ask Junu - and be sure to mention if you have a specific player you're wondering about. ******************************************************************** 4. What to watch in the next biweek We have a bunch of interesting intradivisional matchups coming up! Here are some of the games to keep an eye on in the next biweek. ** Capital City vs. Gulf Shores (Dec. 7), vs. Houston (Dec. 12) and at Houston (Dec. 14). With a 15-9-0 record, the Cougars have started more strongly than some prognosticators may have envisioned before the season started. This biweek sees Capital City facing off three times against the top two teams in the Central Division. ** Gulf Shores-Houston: Home-and-home, at Gulf Shores, Dec. 8, and at Houston, Dec. 10. The lead in the Central Division is at stake in these two games. ** Long Island at Lyndonville, Dec. 12. Jay Onralt will be watching to see if Sgt. Bobrovsky can hold off the Blades, who are in second place in the Northeast. ** Fresno and North Calgary, home-and-home vs. Vancouver: If the Vultures and the Hawks want to keep pace in the Northwest, they'll need a strong showing against the division-leading Whitecaps - whom each team will play twice this biweek. ** Long Island at Stone Harbor, Nov. 27. In another matchup between potential Eastern Conference finalists, the Berzerkers look to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Sound on Nov. 11 in Stone Harbor. In that contest, the Sound outshot Long Island 44-26, but Sergei Bobrovsky out-goaltended Craig Anderson. ** Stone Harbor at Vancouver (Dec. 3), at St. Michael's (Dec. 9) and vs. St. Michael's (Dec. 15). Hot off a perfect biweek, the Sound have their work cut out for them, with three games against last year's Farley Cup finalists. Among the players suffering notable injuries this biweek were Andrej Meszaros of Indianapolis; Tobias Enstrom of Manayunk; James Wisniewski of Red River; and Kaspars Daugavins of Fresno. Unofficial league medical commentator Dr. Sasha Payne Diaz * is available for consultation. (* - say it out loud and slowly; you'll get it ;-) ) ******************************************************************** 5.
