Biweek 0708 in review Is there such a thing as the NSHL Newsletter curse? Gulf Shores Stingrays fans might believe so. A biweek after being touted for going 8-0 in a schedule segment, the Stingrays cooled to a 3-3-2 record, including home losses to Ottawa and division rival Houston - the latter being an 8-0 thumping. Two big culprits for the Stingrays this biweek were their penalty killing and goaltending. Gulf Shores allowed 7 goals on 16 penalty-killing chances, and their teamwide save percentage in the biweek was .867. Houston and Gulf Shores are now tied atop the Central, with 46 points. Meanwhile, Stone Harbor Sound fans might ask for more newsletter publicity, if the team continues to fare well after a mention in the last dispatch. Like Gulf Shores, the Sound was mentioned last biweek after an 8-0 segment. Yet Stone Harbor followed up with a 7-1 biweek. That tally included not just a stingy nine goals allowed, but also a 3-0 clip against last year's Farley Cup finalists: a 3-1 road win over Vancouver and two wins over St. Michael's including a 2-1 victory on the road. Matt Duchene continued his torrid scoring pace with six goals and eight assists. Having won 15 of their last 16 games, the Sound now sits in first place in the Atlantic with 52 points, three ahead of St. Michael's. Springing to life this biweek was Pittsburgh, as the Hornets buzzed to a 7-1 record. The line of Pavel Datsyuk, Patrick Kane and Milan Lucic combined for 40 points, while goalie Henrik Lundqvist provided steady, solid play in net for all eight games this biweek. Pittsburgh now sits tied with Capital City for third in the Central, with 36 points. Speaking of Pittsburgh, Part I: How cool would it be in real life to see Patrick Kane and Pavel Datsyuk skate on the same line, like they do for the Hornets? You can practically hear the Harlem Globetrotters theme song playing the background ... Speaking of Pittsburgh, Part II: Your fun stat of the biweek is: Marcus Kruger has seven goals through 32 games. That puts him ahead of not only his real-life figure of four goals through 47 games, but also of Hornet teammates Horton and R.J. Umberger. Speaking of Pittsburgh, Part III, aka this week's entry in the Don't Poke the Bear Department: Michael Grabner might be known as a winger who's known for his skill rather than his fists. But don't tell that to Pittsburgh's Nathan Horton, who fought Grabner in a 5-3 Pittsburgh win on Dec. 10. It would appear that this was Grabner's first-ever major penalty for fighting during the Austrian forward's professional career (editor's note: During his AHL and NHL careers, Grabner hasn't had a year in which his penalty minutes added to an odd number). Also in that game: Pittsburgh spotted the Chiefs a 3-0 lead through the first 12 minutes but potted five unanswered goals for the win. Also coming to life in the Eastern Conference this biweek was Corner Creek, with a 5-2-1 record. Goalie Antti Niemi was a rock in net, with a .932 save percentage and a 2.16 goals against average. Daniel Sedin might be the Green Calves' best-known skater, but Corner Creek's success this biweek was the result mainly of a cast of lesser-known players - in particular, Michael del Zotto, Matt Cullen, Justin Schultz and Guillaume Latendresse. The Green Calves pushed past Toronto for third place in the Northeast with 35 points - but still trail division leader Long Island, with 48 points, and runner- up Lyndonville, with 46. And along the Pacific, Fresno turned in a 6-1-1 biweek that included beating Vancouver and St. Michael's and handing Stone Harbor their only blemish of the biweek. The Vultures got solid goaltending from its veteran tandem of Niklas Backstrom and Martin Brodeur, with the offense coming from Anze Kopitar, Brian Flynn, Travis Zajac and Mike Cammalleri. With 46 points, Fresno trails Vancouver by seven in the standings. Psst: Rumor has it that Steve Ott of Brooklyn and Lubomir Visnovsky of Florida are definitely available via trade. Interested parties should contact the appropriate front office. In case you missed it, here are some interesting highlights from the last biweek: ** As you may remember, this biweek started after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Based on some of the total shots on goal in some of these games, it looked like a bunch of teams were still trying to work off their tryptophan. Among the games this biweek in which the two teams combined for less than 50 shots on goal were Vancouver at Boston on Dec. 4 (VAW 28, BOS 18); St. Michael's at Boston on Dec. 6 (STM 29, BOS 16); Manayunk at St. Michael's on Dec. 14 (STM 28, MAN 20); Indianapolis at Gulf Shores, Dec. 12 (GSS 34, IND 15); Ottawa at Lyndonville, Dec. 15 (LYN 20, OTT 17; that has to be a record low for the NSHL); Fresno at Stone Harbor, Dec. 4 (VOF 28, SHS 21); Vancouver at Fresno, Dec. 7 (VAW 28, VOF 21) and the Sasquatch at Vancouver on Dec. 15 (SES 25, VAW 23). ** Meanwhile, Corner Creek and Capital City combined for 80 shots (CGC 49, CCC 31) in a Green Calvevs 5-3 win on Dec. 3. ** And speaking of the 80s: It must have been "Back to the '80s" night in Florida on Dec. 8 when the Rainiers beat the Hellcats 5-4. The teams combined for 80 shots, with the Hellcats' Jason LaBarbera also facing 14 Goalie Ratings. Florida sniper Chris Kunitz decided to get in on the '80s fun by recording a Gordie Howe hat trick, which included dropping the gloves with rough-and-tumble Rainiers forward Rich Clune. We eagerly await seeing videos of players from that game leaving the dressing room wearing parachute pants and zipping away from the arena in a DeLorean ... Stat lines of note in the past biweek include: -- Jonathan Toews, Indianapolis: four goals, seven shots on goal, +3 rating, in a 6-4 win over Missouri on Dec. 14. -- Evander Kane, Stone Harbor: three goals, 12 shots on goal, +3 rating, in an 8-0 win over Boston on Dec. 10. -- John Mitchell, Manayunk: two goals, two assists, six shots on goal, +3 rating, 2 takeaways, in a 7-0 win over Boston on Dec. 12. -- Eric Staal, Gulf Shores: two goals, two assists, takeaway, hit, in a 6-0 win over Indianapolis on Dec. 12. -- Tyler Seguin, Toronto: two goals, two assists, nine shots on goal, in a 7-2 win over Missouri on Dec. 5. -- Corey Crawford, St. Michael's: 51 of 53 shots saved, in a 2-1 loss to Stone Harbor on Dec. 9. -- Andrei Markov of the Sasquatch: two goals, two assists and a takeaway, in an 8-2 win over Florida on Dec. 5. -- Matt Cullen, Corner Creek: two goals, two assists, 10 of 12 faceoffs, in a 6-2 win over Houston on Dec. 5. -- Tim Gleason, Manayunk: five hits in a 2-0 loss to Florida on Dec. 9. -- ... and what the heck, looks like Biz Nasty can do more than Tweet: Paul Bissonnette, two assists, takeaway, in a 4-3 Boston win over Quebec on Dec. 15. -- Among the teams that went through a game without a single successful penetration are Indianapolis, in their Dec. 3 game against visiting Lyndonville; and Boston, in their Dec. 6 game vs. St. Michael's. Finally, a couple of notes from Commissioner Junu Kim: ** "As previously mentioned: You have an additional week to finish this biweek's games HOWEVER: That biweek will end on the SATURDAY after New Year's Day - Jan. 4 - so that I hopefully can get all info out no later than Monday AM, Jan. 6. In other words: DO NOT PLAN on Sunday, Jan. 5, being a day to take care of your NSHL stuff. If a team reports games on Jan. 5, those games will be considered late and the team will be subject to IPs." ** "Watch your player usage! I've already maxed out usage on Joffrey Lupul ... and I bet some of you have players who are close to, if not at, their usage limits." ** "The NSHL trade deadline takes place at the end of biweek 1314 - which is on the first weekend in February. Plan accordingly!" ** "The NSHL still doesn't have any associate coaches. If you know anyone who would be a good backup, please send them my way ... or ask them if they're OK with me contacting them." ** "And finally ... best wishes to you and yours for a joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy 2014!" ******************************************************************** 2. Player of the Week / Goalie of the Week Player of the Week: Patrick Kane, Pittsburgh We all know that this skilled forward has slick passing moves. But this biweek, Kane showed how he's also proficient at lighting the lamp. Kane had 12 goals - three of which were game-winners and four of which came on the power play - and three assists for 15 points, as the Hornets recorded a 7-1 biweek. Also under consideration: Jaromir Jagr, Quebec City; Matt Duchene, Stone Harbor; and Pavel Datsyuk, Pittsburgh. Previous Players of the Week in 2013-14: Week 0102: Eric Staal, Gulf Shores Week 0304: Sidney Crosby, Vancouver Week 0506: Matt Duchene, Stone Harbor Goalies of the Week: As with last biweek, there were a lot of great candidates. But the nod this time again goes to Craig Anderson of Stone Harbor. He played only five games but won four of them, including the three games that the Sound played against St. Michael's and Vancouver. Anderson's numbers for the biweek: 4-1, a 1.80 goals against average, a .932 save percentage and 77.8 percent of Goalie Ratings stopped (21 of 27). Also under consideration: James Reimer, Quebec City; Henrik Lundqvist, Pittsburgh; Jimmy Howard, Ottawa; Antti Niemi, Corner Creek; Niklas Backstrom, Fresno; and Ben Bishop, Stone Harbor. Previous Goalies of the Week in 2013-14: Week 0102: Sergei Bobrovsky, Long Island Week 0304: Craig Anderson, Stone Harbor Week 0506: Brian Elliott, Gulf Shores ******************************************************************** 3. What to watch in the next biweek Here are some of the games to keep an eye on in the next biweek. Most of the bigger games are taking place in the West. ** Capital City at Gulf Shores (Dec. 18) and at Houston (Dec. 22). The Cougars knock heads against the two teams ahead of them in the Central, after going 3-0 against them last biweek. Unfortunately for Capital City, the team went 0-5 against their reamining opponents last biweek. Speaking of the Central ... ** Indianapolis vs. Gulf Shores (Dec. 27), vs. Houston (Dec. 29) and home-and-home vs Capital City (Dec. 21 in Capital City, Dec. 24 in Indianapolis). The Chiefs will have their hands full with the kingpins in the Central. Speaking of those teams ... ** Houston at Gulf Shores, Dec. 25. NSHL Network viewers get a Christmas Day goodie: The chance to watch these two Central Division contenders wish good tidings to each other by unleashing thundering bodychecks. The Stingrays will be out to avenge an 8-1 home-ice loss to the Aeros last biweek. ** Stone Harbor at St. Michael's, Dec. 26: After going 0-2 against the Sound last biweek, the Privateers get another crack at their divisional rival. Look for St. Michael's to tighten up defensively - or at least prevent the Sound from unleashing 53 shots on goal, which Stone Harbor did against the Privateers in a 2-1 win on Dec. 9. ** Vancouver at Fresno, Dec. 28: The Vultures split a home-and-home set against the Whitecaps last biweek and will need more points against the Northwest Division leaders to stay in the division race. Among the players suffering notable injuries this biweek were Jamie Oleksiak of Houston; James Wisniewski of Red River; Kaspars Daugavins of Fresno; and all three of the free agents Ottawa signed last biweek: Colby Armstrong, Kevin Westgarth and Ian White. The latter two sustained injuries expected to last muliple weeks. ******************************************************************** 4.
